How many felony defendants are released from custody before their case is heard and how many of these fail to appear in court or are rearrested while in a release status? An estimated 57% of felony defendants were released prior to the disposition of their case, ranging from 12% of murder defendants to 73% of fraud defendants. Approximately a third of released defendants failed to comply with the terms of their pretrial release. Twenty-one percent of released defendants failed to appear in court as scheduled; and 21% were arrested for a new offense, including 14% for a new felony. |
