Department of State Overview
The mission of the Department of State is to advance freedom for the benefit of the American people and the international community by helping to build and sustain a more democratic, secure, and prosperous world composed of well-governed states that respond to the needs of their people, reduce widespread poverty, and act responsibly within the international system.
Combating violent extremism is not only a U.S. concern. Accordingly, robust and regular two-way information sharing and collaboration with international partners continue to be cornerstones of our effort to thwart terrorist attacks.

September 27, 2012, could be the day that forever changed the lives of a group of teenagers from the low-income township of Chitungwiza (population one million) outside of Harare. I hope that date does prove fateful. I'll know it was auspicious if I see Zimbabwean names on the list of the 2017 Berkeley graduating class. If the names are there, I can say I saw the students get their first taste of northern California in a cramped, hot classroom off a dusty road near some of Zimbabwe's...

Regardless of their country of origin, these athletes and coaches became a team...

The United Nations' Human Rights Council in Geneva just concluded its 21st session. This also happened to coincide with the end of the United States' first term back on the council -- we rejoined in 2009. Working together, I think we made significant progress across a wide range of issues.
Early in the session, the United States along with the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Lithuania, the Maldives, Mexico, and Nigeria, presented a...
