Heart disease usually begins with coronary artery disease, which may lead to chest pains, irregular heartbeats, heart attacks or heart failure. The key to reducing the risk of heart disease and maintain a healthy heart  is to manage certain risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes. Another risk factor is tobacco usage—both smoking and smokeless tobacco.

The global health engagement campaign recognizes the year-round efforts that assist in the delivery of quality health care in cities, villages and remote regions that span the globe. The MHS carries out its work in partnership with federal agencies, allied governments and international organizations in responding to the scene of disasters, providing direct health care in underdeveloped nations, mentoring host country military medical personnel, rebuilding critical health infrastructure and supporting research to fight disease.
