Digital Preservation and Access (DiPA) Award

The purpose of the Digital Preservation and Access (DiPA) Award is to increase accessibility to historically significant and unique items in the South Central Region by providing funding for Network members to digitize portions of their collections. These digital collections will be made freely available online.

2012-2013

University of Texas Medical Branch Moody Medical Library, Galveston, TX Project:In Pasteur's Own Hand: The Creation of a Digital Repository

Description: The purpose of this project is to create a digital repository of carefully selected material from the private library of Louis Pasteur (1822-1895). This project seeks to dramatically improve user awareness and access to the personal and academic thoughts of one of the world's most celebrated scientists. The Pasteur Collection held at the Blocker Collections at UTMB contains 154 items including books, offprints, prints, manuscripts and unpublished handwritten letters by Pasteur which he maintained in his personal library. This project envisions digital preservation and also foresees increased user access to this collection. The project will allow the library to offer some of these materials in English, edit the images for legibility, enter descriptive metadata, and provide access to this Collection on both the Moody Medical Library and the Texas Digital Library websites. Digitized PDFs images will feature the original document, the French transcription of the hand written documents and notes, and the English translation.


2011-2012

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Library, Little Rock, AR Project: Preserving the History of Medicine In Arkansas

Description: Medical Society readily available in a searchable digital format in order to facilitate historic preservation and research related to the history of the health sciences in Arkansas. Objectives include the following: Purchase quality digital scanning equipment, establish procedures (including metadata, etc.) for creating a searchable digital database, scan the early publications of the Arkansas Medical Society and create a searchable database of the digital files, make the files readily available through the Historical Research Center's digital collections website at http://libcontentdm.uams.edu/hrcdigitalcollections.htm and eventually in PubMed Central, use the scanner to digitize and make available online other important historical materials after the funding period is complete.

Disaster Preparedness Award

This award assists libraries in preparing for disasters so that they, in turn, can assist their communities with health information and other recovery needs after an emergency.

Hydro Public Library, Hydro, OK Project: Disaster Preparedness and Education Using Technology

Description: The Hydro Public Library and the Hydro Fire Department will partner to bring disaster education to first responders as well as implement a disaster plan using technology for communication between the department, library and community.

Dallas Public Library, Dallas, TX Project: Dallas Public Library Emergency Preparedness Planning

Description: This project will allow Dallas Public Library to develop a library and community disaster preparedness plan, including a one-shelf disaster library collection at seven branches throughout the greater Dallas area.

Electronic Consumer Health Outreach Award

The goal of this award is to ensure that health professionals, their patients and the general public are connected to the health information resources they need to make informed health care decisions.

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - Shreveport, Shreveport, LA Project: The YMCA of Northwest Louisiana Project

Description: Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport will partner with the YMCA of Northwest Louisiana to provide computer equipment that YMCA members and staff can use to find online health information at three fitness center locations. The Library will offer training sessions on NLM resources and will develop educational materials to publicize the public training sessions and NLM resources.

Texas AHEC East - Greater Houston Region, Bellaire, TX Project: CLICKS to Sip-n-Surf

Description: The Texas AHEC East - Greater Houston Region will offer a tested program of customized computer literacy classes at two senior centers. The seniors will receive 36 3-hour long coaching sessions on the computer, Internet, MedlinePlus and NIHSeniorHealth.  In addition, they will create the first Internet café in Houston that is designed for underserved seniors.

University of Texas Medical Branch, Moody Medical Library, Galveston, TX Project: Shriners Hospitals for Children - Galveston Consumer Health Outreach Project

Description: The Moody Medical Library and the Shriners Hospitals for Children – Galveston will provide Internet access to Shriners’ pediatric burn patients, their caregivers and family members through a dedicated server, secure wireless system and multiple workstations. This will  increase knowledge and use of currently available electronic health information and science education from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and National Institutes of Health (NIH). In a "train the trainer" approach, project personnel will train Shriners’ staff in use of MedlinePlus and other NIH resources in English and Spanish.

The purpose of this award is to support a wide range of outreach projects aimed at improving access to and use of the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) databases.

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - Shreveport, Shreveport, LA Project: Promoting the Environmental Health Student Portal through School Science Teachers and Librarians

Description: This project will provide instruction to Caddo Parish public school science teachers and librarians on the use of online reliable environmental health information resources available through the Environmental Health Student Portal, including ToxTown, MedlinePlus, and other NLM databases.

Forest Lawn Missionary Baptist Church, Houston, TX Project: Operation Succeed: Help for the Homeless

Description: The goal of this project is to increase female veterans’ use of the NLM databases through effective training in basic computer skills so that the veterans can access authoritative information about medical issues and concerns.

Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library, Houston, TX Project: Shining a Light onto MedlinePlus: Collaboration with the Light and Salt Association

Description: This project will provide a dedicated desktop, laptop and printing capabilities for the staff at Light and Salt (an Asian American community-based organization) for use with their clients and visitors in order to promote the following NLM databases: MedlinePlus’ Health Information in Multiple Languages webpage, Asian American Health and NIHSeniorHealth.

St. Edward Mercy Medical Center, Fort Smith, AR Project: Mercy Crest: Outreach Programs to Increase Awareness of Access to Services and Healthcare Information for the Elderly and Disabled

Description: Mercy Crest Retirement Living and St. Edward Mercy Medical Center (SEMMC) will partner to provide healthcare education sessions for Mercy Crest residents and staff, family caregivers, and community and healthcare professionals. Information on chronic illnesses and health issues facing the elderly and disabled, plus introduction to NLM database resources will be the primary focus of each healthcare education session.

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Little Rock, AR Project: Health Information Centers at the Mexican Consulate and 12th Street Community Clinic

Description: This award will fund 2 health information centers that use MedlinePlus as a primary source of authoritative, easy to read patient education materials at free screening clinics (the Mexican Consulate and 12th Street Community Clinic) in Little Rock, AR. The UAMS Library will purchase, install and maintain equipment for the health information centers, provide MedlinePlus training to healthcare workers, and will ensure relevant MedlinePlus patient information materials are routinely stocked and available.

Face to Face Enrichment Center, Gonzales, LA Project: Project Connections: Your Link to Health Resource Information

Description: This award will address health information and resource needs of women and youth, ages 13-24. Computer workstations will be installed at the community center. Consumers and healthcare providers will be trained on MedlinePlus. 

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - Shreveport, Shreveport, LA Project: Connecting Patients with MedlinePlus through Their Personal Health Records

Description: The purpose of this project is to make LSU Health Shreveport patients aware of MyChart and MedlinePlus Connect and to educate them on how to access this personal health record and the information found within it. Materials will be developed explaining how to access MyChart and will be distributed to inpatients upon discharge and to outpatients at clinic visits.

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - Shreveport, Shreveport, LA Project: Promoting Reliable Online Health Information Through School Librarians

Description: The purpose of this project is increase awareness of MedlinePlus and other consumer health databases among school librarians and K-12 students. School librarians will be trained on MedlinePlus and other NLM databases. The librarians will then be encouraged to develop promotional campaigns for encouraging students to seek reliable online health information from sources like MedlinePlus.

Southeast Louisiana Area Health Education Center Foundation (SEL-AHEC), Slidell, LA Project: Technology Education & Access for Community Health (TEACH)

Description: This project will continue SEL-AHEC’s multi-faceted outreach using the newest mobile technology (iPad, Android Tablet, smart phone) to provide education and access to electronic resources (apps, websites), especially those from the NLM, to enhance the health of the community in the 13 SEL-AHEC parishes.

Greater Houston Area Health Education Center, Houston, TX Project: Double CLICKS

Description: This project will promote MedlinePlus and NIHSeniorHealth resources to healthcare professionals who attend the National AHEC Organization Conference. Project staff will conduct two presentations at the conference: a training session on MedlinePlus and NIHSeniorHealth and an overview of the Operation CLICKS project, funded by the NN/LM SCR in 2009.

University Health System, Care Link Program, San Antonio, TX Project: CareLink Patient Education Initiative: Using MedLine Plus Videos to Reach the Underserved

Description: The purpose of this project is to provide computers, printers, and supplies for two University Health System outpatient clinics (where CareLink enrollment occurs) to allow patients to have access to reliable health information. Each computer will be programmed to allow access to only MedlinePlus, especially the Spanish and English interactive tutorials.

Health Information Literacy Award

The purpose of the Health Information Literacy Award is to support Network member projects, particularly those from community-based organizations (CBOs), faith-based organizations (FBOs) and other organizations which serve minority populations, to develop innovative and creative ways to promote health literacy to these target populations.

Crossroads Pharmacy, Mesquite, TX Project: Improving Health Information Literacy in Seniors Using Internet Resources

Description: This project will be a pilot study assessing the effectiveness of computer training on the MedlinePlus and NIHSeniorHealth databases among seniors in the Southeast Dallas area. The project will utilize two groups: the study group and the control group. The study group will participate in the educational program, while the control group will receive the standard pharmacy prescription drug information handout. An after-training assessment will measure the effectiveness of the training on health literacy.

The purpose of the Needs Assessment Award is to improve health information outreach through increased knowledge of community needs.

Tulane University, Rudolph Matas Library of the Health Sciences, New Orleans, LA Project: The Youth Connection: Matas Library health information needs assessment of youth in New Orleans school-based health centers

Description: The goal of this project is to uncover insights and perspectives about health information-seeking behaviors and needs of youth in New Orleans. A formative evaluation process using focus groups are proposed to elicit this information.

University of Oklahoma - Tulsa Schusterman Library, Tulsa, OK Project: School Health Connection: A Health Information Needs Assessment of School Nurses in Tulsa County

Description: This project will assess the health information resource needs of school nurses employed within the public school districts of Tulsa County. The project will employ electronic surveys and focus group sessions to ascertain current use of health information sources, current school health initiatives, and perceived opportunities for partnerships and collaborations leading to future outreach projects.

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Library, Dallas, TX Project: Dallas Community Partners Survey

Description: Project staff will conduct in person interviews with a variety of organizations from the Dallas County Health and Human Services Public Health Advisory Committee.  The goal of the assessment will be to identify potential collaborative initiatives in public health, health literacy, health access, and health promotion and to form partnerships with the library for specific health information projects

Greater Houston Area Health Education Center, Inc., Houston, TX Project: Sunnyside Update

Description: Greater Houston AHEC, Inc. will assess the health information needs of the predominately African American Sunnyside community in Houston, Texas to increase awareness of needs and provide the information to health and wellness stakeholders. The Sunnyside Update project will examine past and existing health information trends and conduct surveys to find out the best way to address health information disparities for this community.

The purpose of this award is to support projects that promote the value of the hospital library to the hospital administrators and staff.

Cook Children's Medical Center, Fort Worth, TX Project: Opening New Doors: Cook Children’s Matustik Family Health Library

Description: This project will increase awareness of the Cook Children’s library through an advertising campaign that will promote the library’s existing services such as Ask a Librarian and the library advocacy program.

Project: Good things come in small packages: a small hospital library goes electronic

Description: This project includes educating the staff and physicians about the conversion of the library to electronic resources, educating the patrons about the importance of evidence-based medicine, showcasing the new education/webinar room in the library, promoting awareness of health information that is available to patients and their families, and promoting awareness of health information to the patients at the free/low income clinic.

Project: The Hidden Gem of JPS - The Medical Library

Description: JPS Medical Library staff and a professional production company will develop a short, engaging video that describes various services available at the JPS Medical Library. The Human Resources Department will incorporate the video into the employee new-hire orientation.

Mobile Applications Project (MAP)Award back to Top

The purpose of this award is to provide an opportunity for Network members to provide access to health information utilizing mobile technologies.

Migrant Health Promotion, Inc., Weslaco, TX Project: Promotores(as) Connect

Migrant Health Promotion (MHP) proposes to increase mobile access to health information, including resources from the National Library of Medicine, by providing 12 Promotores(as) with smart phones and training. Equipping MHP’s Promotores(as) with smart phone technology – and training them to use it to access high-quality, accurate, up-to-date health information based on community members’ varying priorities – will result in more effective, efficient, and empowering service for residents of the Rio Grande Valley’s rural colonias.

Project: Disseminate ICANFIT, a mobile application to promote physical activity and access to health

This project will be built upon an ongoing effort to develop ICANFIT, a web and mobile application designed specifically for seniors with the following features: 1) the ability to search local physical activity resources with preset personal preferences, 2) individual goal-setting and physical activity progress tracking, 3) offering social support through virtual networking, 4) sending senior-friendly regular (daily/weekly) healthy tips, and 5) providing easy access to health information. The goal of the project is to disseminate ICANFIT to seniors in rural central Texas.

Santa Fe Indian Hospital, Santa Fe, NM Project: Extending Suicide Prevention and Crisis Response Information to Rural and Urban Healthcare Providers in New Mexico

Description: The Santa Fe Indian Hospital and L&D Associates Consulting Group will develop a culturally-relevant curriculum for presenting suicide prevention and awareness training using NLM products.

Cherokee Nation Health Services Group, Tahlequah, OK Project: CHIP (Cherokee Health Information for Providers)

Description: The Cherokee Nation Health Service group plans to develop a series of culturally appropriate multimedia tools for their patients in the Cherokee language. Additionally, iPad2s will be purchased for the medical and nursing staff so they can access databases, such as Medline/ MedlinePlus, Familydoctor.org. etc. at the point of care.

Regional Symposium Awardback to Top

The purpose of this award is to allow Network members to work with the NN/LM SCR office to coordinate and implement a symposium.

Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library, Houston, TX Symposium Title: Vaccines, Epidemics and Ethics

Description: This symposium will highlight the latest research on vaccines and their role in the prevention and control of infectious diseases and epidemics. Included will be a series of speakers, a physical and digital archival display, a website, a print and web research guide, and an interactive quiz on using NLM databases.

School of Information, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX Symposium Title: Workplace Wellness@ Your Library Symposium

Description: This symposium will share the background and strategies for promoting healthy workplaces and lifestyles among library workers. The symposium will present tailored resources (a Workplace Wellness Inventory, a Wellness Passport, and a document, Know Before You Go: Tips For Healthy Conference Travel), customized training on using MedlinePlus and other NLM products/services, practice with seated exercise routines, and an opportunity to share news about grassroots efforts in libraries.

Technology Improvement Project (TIP) Awardback to Top

This award is intended to implement and increase access to high quality health information. Funded projects are designed to meet the health information needs of "under connected" communities and increase access to health information services within the community.

United Gospel Mission, Dallas, TX Project: Computers for a Homeless Clinic: Establishing an EMR to Provide Health Education during Patient Visits

Description: The objectives of this project are to institute an EMR (electronic health record) at two homeless shelter clinics and to teach patients to access MedlinePlus and MedlinePlus Connect.

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans, New Orleans, LA Project: Partnering with Ville Ste. Marie Linking Seniors to NLM Consumer Health Information

Description: This project will provide technology improvement at Ville Ste. Marie, an assisted living community located in Jefferson Parish, Ville Ste. Marie offers both independent and assisted living arrangements for seniors. LSUHSC - New Orleans Libraries Reference staff will conduct at least two training sessions to staff and residents at Ville Ste. Marie. The toolkit, Helping Older Adults Search for Health Information Online will be used extensively throughout both sessions.

Ochsner Clinic Foundation, New Orleans, LA Project: Medical Education Mobile Outreach (MEMO) Initiative

Description: This project will expand the access of science, medical, and healthcare information for high school aged students in the students in the Summer Scholars STAR Program as well as for students participating in the Ochsner iLab by upgrading the current minimally available technology to cutting edge mobile technology. Projects involving mobile technology will be introduced in the curriculum.

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport, Shreveport, LA Project: HealtheLearning for Girl Scouts: Making Reliable Electronic Health Information Accessible

Description: The LSUHSC-S Medical Library will purchase two laptop computers. These computers will be used in the field to instruct the Girl Scouts of Louisiana – Pines to the Gulf on using reliable online health information resources such as healthelinks, MedlinePlus, and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) databases. The LSUHSC-S Medical Library faculty will conduct educational outreach activities at the Shreveport center to teach the staff and volunteers there how to find trustworthy online health information resources.

Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, Dallas, TX Project: Medical Research and Resource Library

Description: This project will provide for the creation of a web based medical resource center to assist families in understanding a diagnosis, research to compliment healthcare provider services, and education to fortify the decision making process. This award will allow RMHD to construct a Medical Research and Resource Library, providing critical and accurate information and resources. Equipment added to the library including a computer will provide access to online resources including NLM resources such as MedlinePlus.
