Energy
Energy security is important to every American. The United States must address production, conservation, efficiency and reliability across a wide range of energy sources. Doing so will ensure that we decrease our dependence on fossil fuels, increase our national security, and ensure our future economic health.
America is the world’s third largest producer of oil, behind only Saudi Arabia and Russia, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration. Global demand for energy continues to rise, particularly in the United States. We consume more oil than the next five industrialized nation’s combined (China, Japan, Russia, India and Germany) and studies show that global energy consumption will increase by more than 34 percent by 2015.
America must lead the way in developing and utilizing new sources of clean, safe, and reliable energy while producing existing sources more efficiently. While I am extremely supportive of our renewable energy resources, especially West Texas wind, the reality is we are not yet at a place where we should be saying “no” to any particular sources of energy. My sincere hope is that someday we’ll be in a position where we can noticeably reduce our dependence on foreign sources of fossil fuels, but the reality is we are not there yet. The only way we can get there is by increasing production here at home, using our own resources, improving our efficiencies and conserving when possible.
With soaring gas prices affecting every American family, it is imperative that we start increasing oil production here at home. To accomplish this goal, I have cosponsored H.R. 49, the American Energy Independence and Price Reduction Act, which would responsibly open up parts of ANWR to development. I am also a cosponsor of H.R. 840, the SECURE Act, which would allow pre-approved oil and gas permit holders to conduct all operations under the terms of the permit without further delay, and H.R. 993, the Lease Extension and Secure Energy Act, which would extend certain Outer Continental Shelf leases for oil and gas development. Without increasing domestic oil production, we stand little chance of easing prices at the pump.
