House Democratic Whip Nancy Pelosi, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, issued the following statement today, following President Bush's speech to the United Nations in New York this morning:
"The President’s speech today is a positive step. I was pleased to hear him reaffirm our commitment to the pillars of our foreign policy: human rights, elimination of weapons of mass destruction, bringing resources to poverty and fighting the spread of disease. It was an excellent speech in that regard.
"I was also glad that he went to the United Nations and asked for enforcement of U.N. resolutions on weapons inspections and elimination of weapons of mass destruction. We must work with the U.N. in the event that such enforcement fails.
"Our goal is to eliminate those weapons of mass destruction and the threat they pose to Americans, the Iraqi people and, indeed, the world. We must exhaust all diplomatic remedies to achieve that goal before we consider putting our young men and women in uniform in harm’s way.
"Unilateral military action against Iraq could put at risk the international cooperation we need to fight the war against terrorism.
"I have not yet seen evidence of imminent nuclear or other kind of threat that demands immediate military action. But no one in Congress is drawing a line in the sand. If the Administration brings us the evidence and makes a compelling case to the American public that a threat is indeed imminent, or that Saddam Hussein was actively involved in the tragedy of last September 11, we may very well come together in agreement. We are clearly not there yet."
