Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi

Ethics Reform and Speaker Gingrich

Statement of Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi On Ethics Reform And the Actions of the Speaker of the House

Today Newt Gingrich pulled the plug on ethics reform.

After more than four months of hearings, meetings and mark up, a consensus document was produced and approved by an 11-1 vote of the Task Force.

The Task Force made a good faith, bipartisan effort to reform the ethics process. This is what our leadership asked us to do.

On the eve of a House vote, and on the day the Task Force announced public hearings on the Task Force resolution, the Speaker abruptly and unilaterally disbanded the Task Force.

Why?

Because the report was too bipartisan?

Because the report would expedite the investigative process?

Or, was this a ploy from the start -- to have no ethics committee for almost half this session?

Today, the democratic members of the Task Force will honor our commitment to ethics reform and the work of the nearly unanimous Task Force by introducing the resolution to the House.

The Constitution requires, and the American people expect, Members of Congress to uphold a high ethical standard. Clearly the Republican leadership is not ready to honor that trust.
