Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi Secures $13 Million For New Downtown Bus Terminal

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has secured $13 million for the construction of a new downtown bus terminal as part of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA). The new terminal would replace the Transbay Transit Terminal (TTT) which has served commuters for more than 40 years. "This construction is a significant move to meet the needs of San Francisco's thriving downtown business community," Pelosi said. "It also addresses the health, safety and seismic concerns that an aging building poses to commuters."

The Bay Area is described as the third worst region in the nation in terms of freeway congestion. The proposed terminal would be linked to the bridge by new elevated bus ramps making it easier for bus traffic to get into downtown. "It's estimated that traffic tie-ups on I-80, as it comes across the Bay Bridge, costs interstate and intrastate commerce $17.5 million annually. This new terminal would be a step in the direction of alleviating some of that traffic," Pelosi said.

There are also obvious environmental benefits to traffic mitigation. "Fewer cars on the road, translates into less pollution," said Pelosi, "but public transportation has to be efficient in order to get motorists out of their cars. The new terminal will be a transfer point to other means of mass transit."

The $13 million represents the federal contribution to the $131 million dollar construction project.
