Lieutenant General Richard P. Formica

Commander, JFCC-Integrated Missile Defense

Lieutenant General Richard P. Formica was born and raised in Cheshire, Connecticut. He was commissioned in 1977 upon completion of ROTC at Providence College and graduation from Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island. He graduated from the Field Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, and Cannon Battery Officer Course. He is a 1990 graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College, where he earned a Master of Military Arts and Sciences Degree. He graduated from the National War College in 1997 and earned a Masters Degree in National Security Strategy.

Lieutenant General Formica assumed command of US Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command and Joint Functional Component Command - Integrated Missile Defense on 15 December 2010. His previous assignment was on the HQDA staff as Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff, Army where he worked HQDA AMD Task Force and other missile defense related issues.

Prior to that, he served as Commanding General, Combined Security Transition Command, Afghanistan. Previously, he was Director, Force Management, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, HQDA, Washington, DC, a position he held from June 2005 to November 2008. He served as Commanding General III (US) Corps Artillery from August 2002 to June 2005. While in that position, he deployed to Iraq in January 2004 and served as the CG, Force Field Artillery Headquarters and Joint Fires and Effects Coordinator for Multi-National Corps-Iraq until February 2005. He also served on the Joint Staff as the Assistant, then Acting, Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs (Europe), J-5, Washington, DC.

Lieutenant General Formica has had numerous other command, fire support, and staff assignments in Germany, Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Stewart, Georgia, the United States Military Academy, and Headquarters, Department of the Army.

His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Army Achievement Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), and both the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Army Staff Identification Badges.
