Thomas Lograsso has been named Interim Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory.  The appointment is for one year. Lograsso replaces Bruce Harmon, who stepped down from the position of Ames Laboratory Deputy Director on September 1 to return to research and teaching at Ames Lab and Iowa State University.

Ames Laboratory senior scientist Bill McCallum talks about controlling the element cerium for use in rare-earth magnets. McCallum is working to develop a rare-earth magnet that uses more abundant cerium in place of neodymium. McCallum's work is being funded through a recent grant by ARPA-E, the Department of Energy's advanced research agency.

A group of researchers led by Edward Yu, Ames Lab and Iowa State University scientist, has discovered the mechanism that allows drug resistant tuberculosis to defy treatment. The findings, published in the journal by the journal Nucleic Acids Research, a research team led by Yu describes the structure of a regulator that controls the expression of the multidrug efflux pump in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
