Rear Admiral Gregory M. Nosal


Rear Adm. Nosal is a 1981 graduate of the United States Naval Academy.

His career as a naval aviator includes assignments with Attack Squadron (VA) 37; Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1; Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 86; executive officer and commanding officer VFA-82; and, deputy commander and commander CVW-1. During his command tour of VFA-82, the squadron was awarded the Commander Naval Air Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet (COMNAVAIRLANT) Battle "E", Safety "S", and the Chief of Naval Operations Capt. Michael J. Estocin awards.

Assignments to shore and staff billets include Naval Strike Warfare Center; Bureau of Naval Personnel; commanding officer VFA-106; Navy Office of Legislative Affairs; executive assistant to the commander, United States Northern Command and North American Air Defense Command; and, executive assistant to the commander, United States Pacific Command. During his tour with VFA-106, the squadron received the COMNAVAIRLANT Safety "S". His first flag officer assignment was as the associate director, Assessment Division, N81D, on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.

Nosal attended the National War College and received a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

His decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal; two Legion of Merit Medals; four Meritorious Service Medals; two individual Air Medals with Combat "V"; four Strike Flight Air Medals; six Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, three with Combat "V"; the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various other unit citations and campaign ribbons. He has flown more than 5,000 flight hours and has made more than 1,000 carrier-arrested landings.

Nosal assumed command of Carrier Strike Group Two, Jan. 12, 2012.
