Rear Admiral Kevin R. Slates


Born and raised in Pewaukee, Wisc., Rear Adm. Slates was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps in 1982 upon graduating from Marquette University. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Maryland, and has completed the Fuqua Advanced Management Program at Duke University.

Within the Naval Construction Force (Seabees), Slates has served in Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) Five; 31st Naval Construction Regiment; Marine Expeditionary Force; and as commanding officer, NMCB Three. During those tours, he deployed to Sigonella; Puerto Rico; and Southwest Asia in support of Operation Desert Shield; Kosovo in support of Operation Joint Guardian; and Rota, and Guam.

Slates’ facilities and project management assignments include tours in Great Lakes, Ill.; Port Hueneme, Calif.; Indian Head, Md.; Naval District Washington, D.C., and as the commanding officer of Naval Facilities Engineering Command Washington/Regional Engineer Naval District Washington, D.C. Slates also commanded Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Atlantic in Norfolk, Va.

He has had staff tours as the aide to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Logistics (OPNAV N4); assistant chief of staff for Installations and Environment at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejuene; and public works business line operations officer and chief of staff for Naval Facilities Engineering Command.

Slates currently serves as director of Energy and Environmental Readiness (OPNAV N45) on the chief of naval operations staff. He is a Seabee combat warfare officer, a registered professional engineer, and a member of the Defense Acquisition Corps.
