Rear Admiral John R. Haley

Rear Adm. Haley graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Physics in May 1980, and was designated a naval flight officer in 1981. After training as a bombardier/navigator in the A-6E Intruder with Attack Squadron (VA) 128 at Whidbey Island, Wash., he was assigned to VA-52 aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 15. Returning to VA-128 as an instructor in February 1986, he served with Medium Attack Weapons School, Pacific, when the school was commissioned in June 1986.

Haley was selected for transition to pilot and reported to Training Squadron (VT) 27 in Corpus Christi, Texas, for primary flight training in October 1987. After completing intermediate and advanced jet training in Kingsville, Texas, he was designated a naval aviator in January 1989, and after training with VA-128 reported to VA-145 in October 1989 aboard USS Ranger (CV 61) with CVW-2, including combat in Operation Desert Storm. In January 1993, he reported to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Inspector General (IG) in Washington, D.C., as executive assistant to the deputy IG for inspections. Transitioning to the EA-6B Prowler, he reported to the Gauntlets of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 136 aboard USS Independence (CV 62) in Yokosuka, Japan, serving as executive officer and commanding officer from March 1995 to October 1997. After nuclear training, he next served as the executive officer of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), from December 1999 until June 2001.

Haley reported to Commander, U.S. Naval Air Forces Atlantic Fleet, serving as the assistant chief of staff for Readiness and Requirements until January 2002 then commanded USS LaSalle (AGF-3) the 6th Fleet flagship based in Gaeta, Italy, until January 2004. After serving as chief of staff to Commander, U. S. Naval Air Force Atlantic Fleet he commanded USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) from June 2005 until January 2008. His next assignment was as deputy chief of staff to Commander, U.S. Pacific Command in Hawaii until July 2008 when he reported as commanding officer of USS George Washington (CVN 73) in Yokosuka, Japan. From April 2009 until March 2011 Haley served as director, Operations and Plans for the chief of naval operations.  In April 2011, he assumed command of Carrier Strike Group Five/Task Force Seven Zero permanently embarked on board USS George Washington homeported in Yokosuka, Japan.

Haley has 3,500 flight hours and over 1,000 carrier landings. His awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (3 Individual and 6 Strike/Flight), and other campaign and unit awards.
