Rear Admiral Dan Cloyd




Rear Adm. Cloyd assumed duties as commander, U.S. Naval Forces Japan, and commander, Navy Region Japan, in April 2011.

Cloyd is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, the United States Naval Test Pilot School, the Navy Nuclear Power Program and the National Defense University with a Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy.

Cloyd served at sea with Fighter Squadron (VF) 31 embarked in USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67), and VF-74 and Carrier Air Wing 17 embarked in USS Saratoga (CV 60). He also served as executive officer in USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).

Cloyd commanded VF-84, VF-143 embarked in USS George Washington (CVN 73), the fast combat support ship USS Sacramento (AOE 1), the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), and he most recently served as commander, Task Force 70 and Carrier Strike Group Five forward deployed to Japan in George Washington.

Ashore, he served as a test naval flight officer at the Pacific Missile Test Center; as an action officer in Joint Operations Division and as executive assistant to the Vice Director for Operations, the Joint Staff; as chief of staff, Naval Air Force, United States Atlantic Fleet; as director, Strategic Actions Group, supporting the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans and Strategy; and as associate director, Assessment Division, staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.
