Operation Forward March

Operation Forward March is a community outreach program for out-of-school youth and adults, ages 16-24+, who are making a transition into the workforce.

This is an intervention program for unemployed or underemployed adults. One of the main goals is to raise job placement rates and lower unemployment and welfare rates.

Participants receive:

  • Intensive life and employability skills training
  • Occupational training in a high-growth, high-demand industry
  • Job placement

With Soldiers serving as positive role models, Operation Forward March introduces participants to the benefits of National Guard enlistment while providing a customized program to achieve educational and career goals.

The current curriculum includes:

  • Job readiness training to help trainees manage their lives and get ready to work
  • Functional life skills:
    • Computer literacy
    • Interpersonal relationships
    • Critical thinking skills
    • Business skills
    • Anger management and substance abuse prevention
  • Pre-employment & work maturity skills, including:
    • Job search skills
    • How to be a successful and effective employee
    • Career search
    • Job-specific skills

Operation Forward March has served more than 10,000 older youths and adults with a job placement rate nearly double the national average.

The program has been successfully co-hosted in Florida, Rhode Island, Mississippi and Hawaii by a collaboration between the National Guard, the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
