Academy cadet dies

9/28/2012 - U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AFNS) -- An Air Force Academy cadet died here Sept. 28, officials announced.

The cadet, whose identity is being withheld until 24 hours after next-of-kin notification, was found unconscious the morning of Sept. 28 and transported to Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., where the cadet was pronounced dead.

Commandant of Cadets Brig. Gen. Greg Lengyel informed the Cadet Wing of the death today during lunch.

"The Academy family is deeply saddened by the death of one of our own. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of our cadet," said Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Mike Gould. "Our Air Force family is grieving this loss, and we are committed to helping the family through this extremely difficult time."

Academy personnel are coordinating funeral arrangements with the cadet's family. The cause of the death is under investigation.

What a very sad time for the family and friends of this cadet. Our thoughts and prayers are with him her and the family as well as those friends who are affected by this tragedy.
