Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury will host its next webinar, “Identifying Concussion/mTBI in Service Members,” March 22, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. (EDT).

According to the Defense Department, 233,425 service members sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from 2000-2011. Concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury, is the most common brain injury sustained by service members but is sometimes more difficult to diagnose than moderate or severe TBI.

The Defense Department recognizes the importance of screening as a valuable tool for early detection of mild TBI. With the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Defense Department has implemented system-wide screening procedures to help identify mild TBI and promote appropriate care for service members and veterans. In this webinar, subject matter experts will review department screening procedures and measures and discuss the impact of mild TBI in service members.

Featured speakers are:

  • Dr. David L. Brody, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo., assistant professor of neurology
  • Lt. Tracie B. Lattimore, U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, TBI Programs, deputy director

All professionals who care for service members are encouraged to attend, including service members and their families. You may register now, or visit the webinar section for more information.

Continuing education units and continuing medical education credits are now available. Click here for details. To obtain credits, you must pre-register using the Adobe Connect platform.

Will there be a time to review this webinar? I am scheduled with VETERANS to see at that time and will have to see it later.

It's unfortunate that no APA approved CE's are available.

I have registered for your upcoming March Webinar, and in the registration form regarding CE's, I am wondering if the webinar will qualify for CE's for those of us who are Licensed Mental Health Counselors or LPCs? I am a master's level therapist and would be looking for CE's that are NBCC approved. Thank you for your time.

@Elaine, Thanks for the question. Currently, we only offer CEs for social workers, nurses, physicians and occupational/physical therapists. For those participants in different disciplines, we recommend registering so that you are able to obtain a certificate of completion (which will list all accreditations including AMA). You can use this certificate to approach your professional organization to negotiate CEs.

@MilPsyDoc, Agreed. Our CEU provider is in the process of completing the APA accreditation application. We hope to have CEUs for psychologists in the summer.

Would this be available for review after the presentation? I am already scheduled to see patients at that time. I am very interested in this as I am part of pilot program at Luke AFB to move all EOD (explosive ordinance) members under my empanelment. Thanks.

We are currently representing several individuals from the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit for Social Security Disability Benefits, and a few with TBI's, and we are looking forward to this webinar. Hoping this will provide some better understanding of such injuries from a military standpoint as compared to a civilian acquired injury. Thanks!

@James, Yes! The webinar presentation will be available for download here: www.dcoe.health.mil/webinars. The audio will also be available online after the webinar. For questions, please email DCoE.MonthlyWebinar@tma.osd.mil. Thank you for your interest.

I requested medical review with DCOE in the past. I also learned of the moderate TBI after military discharge. I went to private doctors to learn the truth about "unexplained medical illnesses." The private doctors identified TBI, SCI, Sarcoidosis and many other problems. The military healthcare denied benefits as well as Veteran Benefit Services. On April 7, 2010, I lied in hospital from another life threatening episode (appendix eruption). The Social Security Administration granted disability benefits associated with cerebral trauma in addition to preponderance of medical information. Really what is the purpose of all these advocates when they cannot read medical reports to determine severity or traumas?
