ORISE Developed WeB-MEDIS—a Web-based Patient Tracking System for Emergency Responders and Hospitals

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) designed, developed and deployed WeB-MEDIS—a Web-based patient tracking system designed to provide emergency responders and hospitals with a highly portable system for inputting, sharing and tracking patient data from the field.

The system was originally created for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program with guidance from firefighters, paramedics and hospital staff.

Patient vital signs, contamination and transportation status are entered into a tablet PC, or a Palm® or Pocket PC PDA. Based on jurisdictional procedures and through WeB-MEDIS, patient status can be viewed by receiving facilities and emergency operations centers in the region.

• Incorporates commercial, off-the-shelf components that can be quickly replaced if lost, destroyed or broken
• Incorporates initial planning integration and training
• Includes customization of application and hardware to fully integrate operational procedures and protocols
• Provides both Wi-Fi and cellular options to assure connection to the Internet and the WeB-MEDIS server
• Already tested and demonstrated at Pueblo, Colo., and Tooele, Utah, CSEPP exercises, as well as at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs mass casualty exercises
