The Plain Writing Act of 2010 (Act) requires Federal agencies to communicate clearly in a way “that the public can understand and use." Although we have always been committed to writing clearly, beginning in October 2011, we will follow the Federal Plain Language Guidelines when writing or changing documents. We will use plain language in:

  • Forms you must complete to get any Federal Government benefits or services;
  • Documents that provide you with information about Federal Government benefits or services; or
  • Directions on how to follow Federal Government rules.

We will be working hard to comply with this new law. You can help by letting us know if you have trouble understanding a form, notice, pamphlet, or any of our web pages. Please send your comments, questions, or the name of a communication you think we should revise to our mailbox at OPI.Net.Post@ssa.gov
