Baumholder tops Bamberg, clinches D-III top seed

BAUMHOLDER, Germany - All-Europe wide receiver-turned-quarterback Ben McDaniels had a hand in five touchdowns Friday night to lift the Baumholder Bucs to a 41-18 victory over the visiting Bamberg Barons that clinched the Division III regular-season crown for the home team.

McDaniels scored on a 90-yard punt return, a 20-yard run from scrimmage, a 45-yard interception return and threw a 21-yard TD pass to Anthony Hendrix. McDaniels also kicked three extra points and completed a two-point conversion pass, again to Hendrix, and busied himself on defense by picking off two passes, deflecting another, recovering a fumble and making eight unassisted tackles.

Ben Holliday, who rushed 11 times for 67 yards, ran 6 yards for Baumholder’s second TD, and Demonte Fisher ran 22 yards for the final TD of the day for Baumholder, which led 29-6 at halftime and 41-12 at the end of three quarters.

According to assistant coach Erik Majorwitz, 14 rushers combined to gain 309 yards for Baumholder. Hendrix ran for 100 yards of that total on 10 carries.

Defensively, Baumholder got five tackles from Holliday, who also forced a fumble and recovered one and shared a sack with Isaak Giefer. Giefer also made five tackles, as did Nobleman Soule.

The victory capped an unbeaten regular season for Baumholder, playing nine-man football for the first time this season. Baumholder’s scheduled regular-season finale this Saturday at Menwith Hill was scrubbed because the Mustangs have too few players.
The Bucs (5-0) will host the No. 4 team in D-III in the semifinals on Oct. 20.

Bamberg (3-1) next is scheduled to host Rota in a showdown this Saturday to determine which of them will have home-field advantage when the two most likely play each other again the following Saturday in the D-III semis.
