Balance

I think "balance" is an important word. Many of us -- including me -- simply overload our circuits on the work side of the equation. I recognize how important all that we are doing feels to us, yet I would submit that perhaps we'd be more effective if we "balanced" our work with an appropriate amount of rest and recuperation.

One of the things I'm working hard to ensure, both on the NATO side and within U.S. European Command, is that we all find time for a couple of weeks off this summer. I've asked our senior leaders to ensure this happens.

I know that the pressure to work on Libya, Afghanistan, the Balkans, cyber, missile defense, piracy, humanitarian operations, NATO Command Reform, and many other key operational priorities is enormous. The topics dominate the security headlines and the sense that everything we do is *crucial* permeates the day-to-day workplace.

Yet throughout our enterprise, we have good shipmates who can "balance" the workload when we take a break. With a well-managed plan, there is every reason to expect that we can afford a chance to relax and recharge.

Our families, friends, and shipmates at work are all important to each of us. Please ensure that you take some time this summer to connect with them socially, to work out and get in shape, to enjoy your time in Europe with an energizing trip, and to come back to work fresh for the challenges ahead.

"Balance" between work and rest is how we remain stronger together!

Commander, U.S. European Command and
Supreme Allied Commander, Europe
