PACEVILLE, Malta — Eurasia Partnership Capstone 2010 (EPC 10) kicked off with a reception attended by Douglas Kmiec the U.S. ambassador to Malta, Vice Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., commander of the U.S. 6th Fleet, and Brig. Gen. Martin G. Xuereb, Malta’s chief of defense here, Nov. 14.
Over the next six days 103 representatives from Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and the United States will work together in non-formal environments such as seminars and workshops aimed at increasing maritime safety and security.
“Armed Forces of Malta is happy to welcome such an opportunity as it fits in perfectly with the aims and objectives of our Maritime Safety and Security Training Center,” said Xeureb. “This island has served as the crossroads for numerous maritime forces and merchant men throughout history. I am confident that the wealth of knowledge our instructors have gained through advanced training and many years of operational duties will serve the participants well throughout the duration of this course.”
EPC 10 is sponsored by Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, and is the first edition to take place in Malta. EPC 09 took place in Souda Bay, Greece.
“EPC has essentially stayed the same over the years,” said Harris. “The goals have remained the same, to develop trust and cooperation amongst the participants and to promote regional maritime security.”
Harris continued adding that this year’s EPC will consist of a comprehensive, robust and challenging agenda which will provide participants with numerous opportunities to operate together and develop productive relationships.
Workshop topics include maritime security activities such as maritime search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, marine environmental protection and leadership development courses for non-commissioned officers.
