NOVO SELO, Bulgaria — Soldiers in a convoy drive down a seemingly empty road when suddenly black smoke appears on the side of the road, signaling an improvised explosive device attack. The convoy stops, and the soldiers rush out of their vehicles, taking up defensive positions around the convoy while a wounded soldier is cared for and a nine-line medical evacuation (medevac) is requested by radio.

When the group arrived at the hospital, the nurse who greeted them did not realize they were from a Navy ship, and began to turn them away, insisting the hospital did not have the budget to afford such a piece of equipment. The group was pleased to tell her that they were from the USS Doyle, and that the scale was, in fact, a donation from the ship for the hospital. The nurse's eyes filled with tears, and she hugged each of the sailors.

STUTTGART, Germany — The Office of the Secretary of Defense has contracted with Military One Source (MOS) for a new program. Starting Oct. 15, MOS will offer a Short-Term Solution Focused Telephonic (STSF-T) Consultation Program. The U.S. European Command Headquarters Quality of Life conference discussed the need for increased counseling resources. The result was the STSF-T Consultation Program, which will include up to six sessions per person, per issue and will be consistent with the in-person counseling service available via Military OneSource in the continental U.S.

MAPUTO, Mozambique — Sailors aboard USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98) donated more than 100 units of blood during a blood drive aboard the ship Sept. 18 after learning of a national blood shortage in the southeastern African nation of Mozambique as they planned to make the U.S. Navy's first port visit in more than 30 years to the Mozambique capital of Maputo.
