Helmets Throughout History

There's a lot of history behind that protective piece you place around your head. The word itself, "helmet" has been around since the 15th century (according to Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary). Helmets safeguarded the heads of soldiers dating back to 900 B.C., protected our nation's first firemen, and even saved the life of famed daredevil Evel Knievel when he misjudged a motorcycle jump over 13 delivery trucks. During March, we will take a virtual walk through time and look at a few of the more well-known helmets from different ages, countries, professions and sports. From ornamental and fanciful to functional and protective, check out the many shapes, sizes and styles of what humans have been using to protect their heads.
