Begun as a small joint venture between USAID and Commerce to help the former Soviet Bloc countries of Eastern Europe transition to more market-oriented economies, CLDP has expanded to help meet the legal technical assistance needs of more than 50 countries in Eurasia, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.
CLDP works across Sub-Saharan Africa to increase coordination, communication and cooperation through an interagency approach to the protection and enforcement of intellectual property.
CLDP is helping Iraq establish a regulatory environment to encourage investment, growth, and innovation in Iraq’s telecommunication sector, by providing advice on laws and institutions that govern the sector and by developing skills of its government telecommunications attorneys.
CLDP, in partnership with Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Oklahoma State University, is assisting Armenia and Georgia to develop and manage technology transfer offices in order to further R&D commercialization and innovation.
CLDP in Action
As part of the USG effort to develop Iraq’s new commercial courts, CLDP conducted a workshop in Baghdad at Iraq's Judicial Development Institute from December 17-20. The workshop was be led by Federal Judge for the Southern District of New York, Jed Rakoff, and focused on the role of judges in adjudicating disputes involving letters of credit.
