Press Releases: 2011

September 20, 2011
For the thousands of service men and women discharged under ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and the countless others who have sacrificed their integrity all these long years, today is a day long awaited. The ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy was a rebuke not only to those gay and lesbian Americans who wished to serve under our flag and risk their lives for it but also to the principles of inclusion and equality that we as a nation hold dear. I was proud to help lead the effort last year to repeal this discriminatory policy once and for all. With this step, our military is surely strengthened at a time when we face great threats to our security and continued demands on our troops. Every American has a share in marking this civil rights milestone, because we all benefit from a strong and capable military that reflects our values.

The plan put forward by the President today is a balanced approach to create jobs in the short-term and bring down the deficit over the long-term. It asks everyone to pay their fair share, strengthens Medicare and Medicaid for future generations while protecting beneficiaries, and emphasizes the need for immediate job creation. It lays out how the Joint Select Committee can go beyond their mandated deficit reduction requirement, which I believe is essential to getting a handle on our nation’s deficit. I also support the President’s call for tax reform that would help grow the economy and reduce the deficit by lowering rates and closing wasteful loopholes that only benefit the wealthy and special interests.

"We share with our friends and allies a determination to see this conflict ended peacefully," Hoyer said. "Voting together to oppose unilateral steps that set peace back would strongly reaffirm our common commitment to this shared goal and to the longstanding principle enshrined in the Oslo Accords that both parties ought to reach a solution through direct negotiations. Quite fundamentally, it would be an expression of our common values."

What the President offered was a getting jobs now bill. He wants American jobs to be created as soon as possible and offered a comprehensive package, which is related to one another, putting money in the hands of businesses so they can hire and grow jobs, putting money in the hands of consumers so they will be able to purchase goods.

Today marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to reflect on the history of Latinos in this country and to pay tribute to the contributions they have made in shaping America’s culture and achievements. It is an opportunity for all Americans to celebrate the success of generations of Latinos; from military and public service to business, education and the arts, they have enriched our nation’s heritage.

I am pleased that Republicans have agreed to work with us to fund our nation’s critical highways, mass transit, and aviation systems and not place nearly one million jobs at needless risk. However, legislation extending the FAA and Highway bills is in no way a substitute for responsible long-term authorizations of both these measures. Democrats have long advocated for improving our infrastructure in order to help America to compete with the world and create jobs here at home. Investing in infrastructure is a key component of our Make It In America plan.

Today the Joint Select Committee begins its critical task of putting our nation back on a fiscally sustainable path. It is imperative that the Committee succeed in reaching an agreement so that we can give Americans, businesses, and the international community confidence in our economy and our ability to come together and address the challenges we face. I believe they should strive for the biggest agreement possible. It should be balanced and ensure that everyone pays their fair share, rather than putting the entire burden of balancing the budget on the backs of the middle class and seniors.

I want to thank the Progressive Caucus for their tireless focus on putting Americans back to work. Americans across the country continue to struggle in a weak economy, and the Progressive Caucus has made sure that those Americans are not forgotten. While Republicans have not taken strong action on jobs this year, the Progressive Caucus continues to advocate for job creation measures. I look forward to working with them to create jobs through the President’s American Jobs Act, House Democrats’ Make It In America plan, and the Rebuild the American Dream Framework.

The President has delivered the American Jobs Act to the Hill, and I urge Republican leaders to bring this bill to the Floor as soon as possible. For nine months Republicans have not put forward a jobs plan or taken action to put Americans back to work. The American Jobs Act incorporates ideas that have bipartisan support, and it is paid for by closing wasteful tax loopholes to oil companies and for corporate jets while taking steps toward ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share. A number of provisions are similar to elements of House Democrats’ Make It In America agenda to create manufacturing jobs and lift the middle class. I hope Republicans will put politics aside so that we can pass the American Jobs Act quickly.

I am pleased that today the House was able to amend the Intelligence Authorization bill in order to ensure bipartisan support for this critical legislation. This bill makes smart choices that will help eliminate wasteful spending while still ensuring that our intelligence community personnel have all the tools they need to keep America safe. As we approach the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and confront new threats to the homeland, we are reminded of the challenges we face and honor the brave men and women in the intelligence community who work around the clock to protect us.

A decade ago, the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, changed our world. Today, we reflect on the ways that we have changed in the wake of that dark day; we reflect on both heroism and mistakes, on brave sacrifices and on the deaths of so many we loved.

I thought it was a good speech. I thought it was a very pointed speech. And I thought it was a speech that offered alternatives, as that the President pointed out, both parties have supported over the years. Republicans talk about putting money in people's pockets. The President’s [plan], clearly, most of it is tax cuts to put money not only in people's pockets but in the pockets of small business so they can grow businesses and hire people.

Tonight the President laid out his plan to create jobs and grow the economy through the American Jobs Act.  He reminded us that everyone should have the chance to 'make it in America' through hard work, and how many fear those days are gone.
September 6, 2011
All of us have just returned from the summer break and a lot of us didn't get breaks, per se, but we visited with a lot of our people, both in our own districts and throughout the country. It's no surprise that they are very, very concerned about our economy, about jobs, and yes, they continue to be concerned about the fiscal posture of their country. We need to address jobs and fiscal responsibility.
September 2, 2011
On Labor Day, we celebrate hard-working men and women who have made our country the most productive and prosperous nation in the world. Let us honor American workers’ hard work, innovation, and determination, and also reflect on the struggles they face today. While our economy continues to recover, millions of Americans remain unemployed and are still feeling the effects of the recession.
September 2, 2011
Today, we received word that our economy added 17,000 private-sector jobs in August. This marks the 18th straight month of private sector growth, and a rebound from the days, in early 2009, when we were losing hundreds of thousands of jobs per month. Nevertheless, there was no net job growth last month, and today's numbers are deeply disappointing to millions of unemployed Americans, as well as to all those concerned for the future of our economy.

Today’s release of OMB’s Mid-Session Review serves as yet another reminder that we must take a balanced approach to reducing our deficit, one that includes both spending cuts and revenues. While many challenges remain to get our fiscal house in order, the Mid-Session Review shows that if we find the right balance of spending cuts and tax reform, we will be able to achieve the $4 trillion in deficit reduction necessary to stabilize our debt and continue to grow our economy.

I welcome the President’s speech before a Joint Session of Congress next week to discuss the critical issues of putting more Americans back to work and getting our fiscal house in order. While Republicans have yet to put forth a comprehensive jobs plan, I look forward to hearing President Obama’s ideas and to working with him to implement the Democrats’ Make It In America plan to revitalize our economy and get more Americans back to work.

“I’m disappointed that House Republicans still do not have a real, comprehensive jobs agenda that will create the millions of jobs we need to get Americans back to work. Instead they have a list of proposals to end regulations intended to protect consumers and the environment, making their agenda more about partisan ideology than jobs. While it’s important to continually review regulations to ensure they strike the right balance between protecting consumers and allowing businesses to grow, that is not a jobs agenda. Democrats’ have a real jobs agenda: the Make It In America plan to restore economic growth by creating manufacturing jobs and revitalizing American industry and innovation. I hope this Fall Republicans will work with us to move pieces of this plan forward so more families will make it in America.”

Yesterday marked the 48th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, when more than a quarter million people came to our nation’s capital to demand equality for all Americans, regardless of race, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his landmark ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech. Armed with the power of nonviolence, their efforts helped end a system of racial discrimination. Let us mark this anniversary by honoring the legacy of these civil rights activists who pursued justice for all Americans and rededicate ourselves to equality and fairness. While we have come a long way in achieving racial equality since the March 48 years ago, disparities in employment and opportunity still exist today. Democrats are committed to closing that gap and promoting equality and opportunity through our Make It In America plan, an effort to create well-paying, middle-class jobs so that every American has the chance to succeed.
August 29, 2011
I welcome President Obama's nomination of Alan Krueger to be the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors. An experienced public servant, Krueger's expertise will help our efforts to grow our economy, create jobs and address the causes of long-term unemployment. I look forward to working with Mr. Krueger and President Obama to create jobs, advance the Democrats' Make It In America plan and help get more Americans back to work.

Today, Christopher Shays and Mark Thibault, co-chairs of the bipartisan Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan, previewed their commission’s findings in a Washington Post op-ed. Among their most sobering conclusions: ‘At least one in every six dollars of U.S. spending for contracts and grants in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade, or more than $30 billion, has been wasted.’ This alarming finding is just one more reason our nation needs stronger oversight of defense spending—so that taxpayer dollars can be spent efficiently on keeping our country safe and fulfilling our military’s missions. As the bipartisan select committee on deficit reduction begins its work, it is essential that the committee’s members focus on all of the contributors to our deficit, on both the revenue and spending sides. The findings detailed today remind us that all of our nation’s spending, including defense spending, deserve to be closely scrutinized.

This afternoon, I joined Southern Maryland officials for an aerial tour of Calvert and St. Mary's Counties to assess the damage to our district from last night's storm. According to reports, portions of Calvert and St. Mary's appear to be among the state's worst hit areas, leaving tens of thousands of residents without power. It appears that our electric grid experienced the most damage, in addition to that experienced by individual homeowners. Fortunately, there is not as much devastating flooding as we've seen in the past with other storms, such as that experienced after Hurricane Isabel.

"I believe that Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke was correct today when he observed that partisan brinksmanship over the debt limit damaged financial markets and the American economy. Now that both parties have named the members of the bipartisan joint committee on the deficit, it is time to address our nation's serious budget challenges with less concern for partisan advantage, and more concern for the common good and our shared fiscal future...

“Today, America marks Women’s Equality Day: the anniversary of the day women secured the right to vote through the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. This amendment was only passed as a result of the work of generations of women, who struggled for a full and equal voice in our democracy...
