Veterans forced to use private insurance
I have joined my colleagues in disgust over President Obama’s plan to force private insurance companies to reimburse the Department of Veterans Affairs for care provided to service-connected and disabled veterans. Not only is this proposal inconsistent with the VA’s mandate to care for injured and disabled veterans, it will force many veterans to exceed their maximum coverage limits.
This week the President met with leaders from the nation’s largest veterans organizations. The meeting is best summarized by American Legion National Commander Dave Rehbein, who said, “It became apparent during our discussion today that the President intends to move forward with this unreasonable plan. He says he is looking to generate $540 million by this method, but refused to hear arguments about the moral and government-avowed obligations that would be compromised by it."
One of President Washington’s first missions was to care for veterans. President Lincoln promised "...to care for him who bore the brunt of battle, his widow and his orphan..." It seems clear to us what Lincoln would advise here.
Note: After outrage was expressed by both Democrats and Republicans, President Obama decided to cancel his plan to alter our Veteran’s health care.
