Employment opportunities and career advancement are key concerns for military spouses.  Reasons for seeking employment range from financial necessity to personal fulfillment or independence. Regardless of employment status, military spouses cite the following challenges when considering employment:

  • co-parenting issues when the active duty spouse is on extended deployment or works for long hours
  • availability of quality childcare
  • local labor market conditions
  • frequent and disruptive moves
  • employer bias
  • continuing education
  • credentialing and licensure across states

The military helps families navigate these challenges by ensuring that service members and their spouses are aware of and have access to military support systems.  DoD recognizes that in today's all volunteer force, assisting military spouses to adjust to and thrive within the military community is of paramount importance.  Many initiatives are underway to assist the military spouse. DoD and the services are developing web-based resources and increasing the capacity of quality childcare to help spouses identify employment opportunities and actively pursue them regardless of their location.

Service providers working within employment assistance offices or family support centers are uniquely suited to help spouses define and achieve their employment and career goals.  They are aware of the numerous challenges facing military spouses and can provide insight into how to overcome those challenges and identify the programs and initiatives most likely to help any individual spouse meet his or her goals.
