Adaptive Sports and Recreation

Adaptive Ski and Sports Programs The Adaptive Ski and Sports Programs website contains links to various programs across the United States, Canada, and Europe that offer ski and sports programs for the disabled.

Alpine Meadows Disabled Sports USA Alpine Meadows is a ski resort in the North Lake Tahoe California area, near Squaw Valley. Alpine Meadows partners with Disabled Sports USA, Far West (DSUSAFW) and provides a specifically designed lodge for student athletes with disabilities, daily lift ticket donations throughout the winter, complimentary season passes for full-time staff, and tickets and lesson packages for DSUSAFW's beginner students. Alpine Meadows offers year-round support for DSUSAFW fundraising events as well as annual winter events.

American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation (AAPAR) AAPAR is dedicated to enhancing quality of life by promoting creative and active lifestyles through meaningful physical activity, recreation and fitness experiences across the lifespan with particular focus on community-based programs and offers an Adapted Aquatics Credentialing Course. The AAPAR website provides information on programs, events, news, media, publications, and resources.

American Camp Association (ACA) The ACA is a community of camp professionals who have joined together to share knowledge and experience and to ensure the quality of camp programs. Included on the ACA website is the Find a Camp feature that allows users to search for camps, including special needs camps.

American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) The APTA is a national professional organization whose goal is to foster advancement in physical therapy practice, research, and education. The APTA website provides information and resources for education programs, professional development, advocacy, research, and publications, as well as tools for physical therapy professionals.

Armed Services Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) DoD Military Outreach Initiative The Armed Services YMCA DoD Military Outreach Initiative offers free YMCA memberships at participating YMCAs throughout the United States and Puerto Rice to families of deployed National Guard and Reserve service members, families of active duty service members assigned to independent duty locations, relocated spouses of deployed active duty service members, and service members and their families when the service member is in a community-based wounded transition unit.

Boy Scouts of America (BSA)  Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

Breckenridge Ski Resort Adaptive Programs Breckenridge Ski Resort is a ski resort located in Summit County, Colorado near the town of Breckenridge. Breckenridge Ski Resort offers adaptive alpine skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing instruction for individuals with special needs through Adaptive Ski School programs.

Disabled Sports USA (DS/USA) DS/USA is a national nonprofit organization established by disabled Vietnam veterans to serve the war injured. DS/USA offers nationwide sports rehabilitation programs to anyone with a permanent disability including winter skiing, water sports, summer and winter competitions, fitness and special sports events. Dwarf Athletic Association of America (DAAA) The DAAA is a nonprofit organization that provides athletic opportunities for people of short stature. Registration to participate as an athlete is open to everyone of every ability who has a form of dwarfism. Far West Wheelchair Sports (FWWS) FWWS is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization which promotes, develops, and organizes wheelchair sports for individuals with physical disabilities. Frontier Travel Camp Frontier Travel Camp was established in 1997 as a summer camp alternative for individuals with special needs. Frontier travelers are high-functioning individuals sixteen years and older with various learning disabilities, developmental disabilities, and/or other challenges requiring more supervision and guidance than the mainstream camper. The camp's website provides information on available camps and contact information for the organization.

Girl Scouts of the USA Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls. In the Girl Scouts, girls build character and skills for success in the real world in an accepting and nurturing environment. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.

Gliding Stars, Inc. Gliding Stars, Inc. provides an extensive program of adaptive ice skating for people of all ages and challenges. The organization consists of a national headquarters, two product companies, and many local chapters that provide on-ice instructional programs to members of many communities who are challenged by a variety of physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. International Wheelchair Aviators (IWA) IWA is a worldwide group of disabled and able bodied pilots interested in aviation. Members have many different disabilities including paraplegia, quadriplegia, amputation, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, polio, and other conditions. Island Dolphin Care, Inc. (IDC) IDC is a nonprofit organization operating in Key Largo, Florida that was developed to help children with special needs and their families who are dealing with developmental and/or physical disabilities, emotional challenges, and illness through dolphin-assisted therapy. National Alliance for Accessible Golf The National Alliance for Accessible Golf is an organization that works to ensure the opportunity for all individuals with disabilities to play the game of golf. The National Alliance for Accessible Golf website contains information on the Alliance, news, information about the accessible golf tournament, and additional related resources.

National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) The NCPAD provides information and resources that can enable people with disabilities to become as physically active. The NCPAD website provides information on organizations, research, presentations, references, and a listing of programs by state and outside the United States.

National Softball Association of the Deaf (NSAD) NSAD is an organization that governs a national men's, women's, and coed softball league for deaf players. The NSAD website provides information on league rules, the current tournament, and league history, as well as links to related resources.

National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) NWBA is comprised of over 200 basketball teams across twenty-two conferences and seven divisions. The NWBA consists of men's, women's, intercollegiate, and youth teams throughout the United States and Canada. The NWBA website provides official rules, a listing of upcoming events, publications, team registration, and a forum.

New Horizons New Horizons is a nonprofit organization that offers information on various topics to empower individuals with disabilities. New Horizons focuses on the topics of housing, employment, recreation and sports, health care, community, education, transportation, independent living, and adaptive technology.

North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) NARHA promotes safe and effective therapeutic horseback riding throughout the United States and Canada. The NARHA website contains information about the organization, upcoming conferences, center locations, membership information, and resources about equine-related therapeutic activities.

Northeast Passage Northeast Passage is a nationally recognized leader in providing innovative therapeutic recreation services. Northeast Passage delivers disability-related health promotion and adapted sports programs throughout New England. Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) PVA is a congressionally chartered veterans' service organization that has developed a unique expertise on a wide variety of issues involving the special needs of veterans who have experienced spinal cord injury or dysfunction. Park City Mountain Resort Adaptive Lessons Park City Mountain Resort is a ski resort in Park City, Utah, that holds many training courses for the United States Ski Team, including slalom and giant slalom runs. The National Ability Center works in conjunction with Park City Mountain Resort to offer ski and snowboard lessons to people with disabilities along with specialized equipment and techniques to teach people with any type of disability.

Special Olympics Special Olympics is an international organization dedicated to empowering individuals with mental disabilities to become physically fit, productive, and respected members of society through sports training and competition. Special Touch Ministry, Inc. Special Touch Ministry, Inc. began as a small summer camp attended by thirty-two people, and has since expanded to a viable nationwide ministry that would open the doors of the church to people with disabilities. Summer Get Away is a premiere faith-based vacation/retreat experience for those with physical and/or mental disabilities and their families. The ministry's website contains information on the various programs offered by the organization, contact information for local chapters, and a calendar of events.

Therapy/Respite Camps for Kids Therapy/Respite Camps for Kids provides information about summer camps that focus on therapy for kids with special needs and/or respite for kids and their families. The camps are divided by country and by region for those in the United States.

United States Adaptive Recreation Center (USARC) The USARC was founded to ensure that access to skiing, adaptive water sports, and summer camping is available to people with all types of disabilities. The USARC website provides information on winter and summer programs, a listing of special events, and an events calendar.

United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) The USABA enhances the lives of blind and visually impaired people by providing the opportunity for participation in sports and physical activity. The USABA website provides information on sport-specific events, sports and adaptations, the Paralympic Games, and military sports programs.

United States of America Deaf Sports Federation (USADSF) The USADSF fosters and regulates uniform rules of competition, provides social outlets for deaf members and their friends, serves as a parent organization of national sports organizations, conducts annual athletic competitions, and assists in the participation of United States teams in international competition.

United States Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association (USEWHA) USEWHA is a nonprofit corporation, and a member of Disabled Sports USA, dedicated to allowing many participants the opportunity to play electric-wheelchair hockey. The USEWHA website provides information on leagues, news, answers to frequently asked questions, events and contact information for the organization.

United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Military & Veteran Programs The USOC Paralympic Military & Veteran Programs provide post-rehabilitation support and mentoring to American service members who have sustained physical injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, visual impairment/blindness, and stroke. Veterans are introduced to adaptive sport techniques, given opportunities through clinics and camps, and connected with ongoing Paralympic sports programs in their hometowns. Washington Parent Washington Parent serves parents in the Washington, DC metropolitan area by providing family enrichment through education and support in print, online and at selected events throughout the year. Included on the Washington Parent website are resources in the Washington, DC metropolitan area for families with special needs children.

Waterville Valley Adaptive Snowsports Program Waterville Valley is a ski resort in the White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire. The Waterville Valley Adaptive Snowsports Program is a special part of Waterville Valley where physically and mentally challenged children and adults team up with extraordinary volunteers and learn to ski.

Wheelchair and Ambulatory Sports, USA (WASUSA) WASUSA provides sports and recreation opportunities for people with physical and visual disabilities. WASUSA also facilitates, advocates, and develops a national community-based outreach program; provides resources and education; conducts regional and national competitions; and provides access to international competitions. Wintergreen Adaptive Sports Wintergreen Resort is a four-season mountain resort located on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Nelson County, Virginia. Wintergreen Adaptive Sports is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to improve the lives of people with a disability through outdoor sports and recreation.
