Heroes to Hometowns Organizational Structure

The guiding concept of Heroes to Hometowns is that Americans have entered into a "social compact" with their military service members. The service members have sworn to dedicate themselves to protecting America; the service members deserve America's full support in their transition from military service to civilian life.

The primary objective is to coordinate community, state and national resources to develop connections between different networks of support, eliminating duplication and ensure that every transitioning service member has quick and ready access to their benefits and community-based resources.

The primary task is to welcome back transitioning service members and help them navigate the physical, social, psychological and financial needs of leaving military service.

With the goal of developing a nation-wide social network, the Department of Defense networked three key pillars within America, in order to build a strong foundation within every state.

Together, these key organizations will work with other community-based programs to establish a highly adaptable network of support that can only be clearly communicated and delivered at the hero's hometown.

National

The Heroes to Hometowns Program Coordinator is the first point of contact within the program.  Applications are forwarded to the Program Coordinator through online services, referrals from the Wounded Warrior Resource Center and direct contact.  Program Coordinator will initiate contact with the Department Adjutant of the state where the veteran or service member resides.

State

Each department will be asked to appoint a Heroes to Hometowns representative to communicate with charter members from the National Guard State Family Program and State Veterans Affairs Office.  The Heroes to Hometowns representatives will encourage his or her community to establish a state wide support network to include:

  • Government Representatives
  • Members of the clergy
  • Chambers of Commerce
  • Military Family Support Units
  • State Vocational Office
  • State Transition Assistance Office
  • Civic Groups
  • Adaptive Sports Clubs
  • Veterans Affairs Voluntary Services
  • Local Media
  • Leaders of The American Legion local posts
