Hoyer Statement on Manufacturing Report

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Institute for Supply Management released a report showing that the manufacturing sector expanded in September:

“Today’s manufacturing report from the Institute for Supply Management reveals that manufacturing continues to be a bright spot during our economic recovery, expanding in 35 of the last 38 months and adding jobs for 36 consecutive months.  But the recent contraction in the sector makes clear that Congress must take action to help our businesses compete and reduce economic uncertainty so we can ensure this positive outlook continues for our nation’s manufacturers. Congress cannot afford to wait to consider a comprehensive jobs plan, like House Democrats’ Make It In America plan, that invests in and supports this manufacturing growth.

“Instead of working with Democrats to enact Make It In America legislation, House Republicans have chosen simply to go home, leaving town until November with stacks of unfinished business.  In control of the House for twenty-one months, Republicans have yet to propose a comprehensive solution of their own.  Democrats are ready to get to work, and our plan invests in education, innovation, and infrastructure to help U.S. manufacturers compete at home and overseas, creating jobs today that won’t be outsourced tomorrow.  That’s why I’m calling on Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor to bring House Republicans back to Washington so we can get to work on Make It In America legislation right away.  The American people deserve a Congress that is focused not on partisanship but on results.”
