Robert Celotta, Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST), announced the selection of Lloyd J. Whitman to be the CNST’s first Deputy Director. Whitman will begin work at NIST on April 14th.
Whitman, a physicist, is currently at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), where he heads the Surface Nanoscience and Sensor Technology Section, a multidisciplinary research group working at the nexus of nanoscience, biotechnology, and microsystems. In addition to managing research at NRL, Whitman has served for several years as a Science Advisor to the Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Chemical and Biological Defense and Chemical Demilitarization Programs. In this capacity he represents the Department of Defense on the National Science and Technology Council, Committee on Technology Subcommittee on Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology.
Whitman received a Sc. B. in Physics from Brown University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Cornell University. After a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at NIST, in 1991 he joined the research staff at NRL. Whitman has been studying nanoscience and sensor technology for over two decades, with over 140 publications and patent applications, and numerous media citations and awards.
