Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

The FOIA allows the general public to request records in writing from the Federal Government. Some records are released to the public under the FOIA and may therefore reflect deletion of some information in accordance with the FOIA's nine statutory exemptions or two law enforcement record exclusions. A consolidated list of such records is on Defense Link.
tabFOIA Frequently Asked Questions
Who can submit a FOIA request?
Any "person" can make a FOIA request, including U.S. citizens, foreign nationals, organizations, universities, businesses, and state and local governments. Federal agencies or fugitives from the law cannot make FOIA requests.

How do I make a request?

Submit requests for Lackland AFB records in writing to the Lackland AFB FOIA RSC. You will need to cite the FOIA and describe the records as specifically as possible and/or give other details or information of the records you want. This will help us decide where to search and determine what records pertain to your request. You must also include a willingness to pay and contact information (mailing address and telephone number).

Will it cost anything?

Yes; the FOIA allows fee charges based on the requestor's category. There are three categories:

Commercial: Costs include search, review, and reproduction fees (to include costs for any diskettes provided).

Educational, Non-Commercial: Costs include reproduction fees (first 100 pages provide at no cost).

Others: Costs include search and reproduction fees (first 2 hours of search and 100 pages provided at no cost).

The FOIA also allows waivers or reduction in fees if disclosing the information is in the public interest. However, solid justification for reduced fees or complete fee waiver must be provided.

When can I expect a response to my request?
Normally, you can expect a response to your FOIA request within 20 days (except for Saturdays, Sundays, and Federal Holidays) from the date the FOIA office receives it. If special situations exist, the FOIA office will contact you with an estimated completion date and explain the reason for the delay. The Lackland AFB FOIA RSC work requests on a first-in, first-out basis.

How can I obtain copies of transcripts of my AF formal training?
If you misplaced or lost copies of your training records, you do not need to submit a request under the FOIA. Simply contact the Community College of the Air Force.

How do I obtain copies of my personnel records?

People requesting their records send a signed request that includes their name, social security number, contact information and specific record requested. Those requesting a relative's record also need to provide their relationship to the former airman.

tabRelease of E-mail Addresses
Air Force policy is to deny requests for lists of e-mail addresses (both personal and organizational) using FOIA exemption (b)(2)(high). We also rely on FOIA exemption (b)(6) when denying lists of personal e-mail addresses. High (b)(2) protects internal information, the disclosure of which would risk circumvention of a statute or agency regulation. Because DoD e-mail systems are to be used only for official and authorized purposes, the addresses are considered primarily internal. The regulations at issue that could be circumvented include DoD and AF regulations that require us to limit use of e-mail to authorized purposes, and to protect the security of your computer and information systems. Exemption (b)(6) protects information that if released would permit a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy. This does not prohibit an organization from including a single e-mail address on a Web page of in correspondence.
tabQuestions on Processing Your Request
