Army in Europe continues transformation in Italy

Keeping heroes active

HEIDELBERG, Germany –  The Army in Europe in accordance with Department of Defense and Department of the Army direction announced today that it will inactivate the command structure of U.S. Army Garrison Livorno and redesignate it as a satellite site to realign its essential services under its higher headquarters garrison at U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza. As part of this same action, U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza will right-size support services provided to its changing community population.

These actions will result in a decrease in the U.S. Army total population in Italy by 9 military, 71 Department of the Army Civilian and 140 local-national positions. These actions will begin immediately taking into consideration appropriate U.S. and host nation labor laws.

The U.S. Army in Europe leadership understands the effects this type of action can have on employees, both personally and professionally, and they are committed to ensuring all affected personnel clearly understand their rights and options during this process.

Overall, these actions are not related to the recently announced US defense strategy.  Rather, they are part of a longer-term initiative to identify efficiencies and operate more effectively.
