Since March, Syrians have taken to the streets calling for an end to the regime of Bashar al-Assad and a transition to democracy. However, the Syrian opposition has struggled to establish a unified leadership. The United States Institute of Peace hosted the first public discussion in the U.S. with founding members of the Syrian National Council, including opposition figures who are among the leadership of the SNC Council. |

In February and March, three U.N. agencies conducted on-the-ground assessments of the food situation in North Korea and reported that more than 6 million North Koreans – about a quarter of the country’s population – are in urgent need of international food aid. This panel examined what factors are driving key countries’ deliberations on whether to provide food aid to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). This event celebrated the publication of Youth in Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Agents of Change by Stephanie Schwartz published by the U.S. Institute of Peace. Using three cases of post-conflict reconstruction—Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Kosovo—this study goes beyond the well documented cases focused exclusively on child soldiers to examine the roles of the broader youth population and their impact on the reconstruction process. The panelists drew on their own experiences working with youth in conflict zones to distill best practices in addressing youth needs in areas of conflict and pinpointed what issues must be resolved as we look to the future. To better understand the experiences of young diaspora in the United States, integrate their voices into policy dialogues, and encourage youth engagement in peacebuilding, the United States Institute of Peace in partnership with Search for Common Ground and Nomadic Wax, organized the 2010 Youth Diaspora Conference. The Conference was an opportunity for young diaspora from different countries of origin to share their experiences and learn how they can creatively engage in peacebuilding. An evening reception celebrated the conclusion of the 2010 Youth Diaspora Conferece, featuring a keynote address by Grace Akallo. |
