Bureau of Labor Statistics Releases September Employment Numbers

The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that the unemployment rate dropped to 7.8 percent last month. Disability employment statistics for September show an unemployment rate of 13.5 percent among people with disabilities, down from 13.9 percent in August. The percentage of people with disabilities in the labor force was 21.1 percent, and the percentage of people with no disability in the labor force was 69.3 percent.

Free Webinars on Work Incentives & Job Interview Tips

The National Spinal Cord Injury Association will host two free webinars in October in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.  The first webinar, ”Understanding Social Security Work Incentives and Ticket to Work”, will be held on October 11, 2012. A second webinar, “Employment Etiquette: Resume Building and Job Interview Tips” will take place on October 24, 2012.

Labor Department Awards Grant to Establish Technical Assistance Center for Increasing Employment of People with Disabilities

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a $1,098,573 grant to the National Disability Institute to establish the National Center on Leadership for the Employment and Advancement of People with Disabilities (LEAD). The LEAD Center will focus on improving employment opportunities for people with disabilities. It will hold policy and research initiatives on improving employment outcomes, including job retention, for people with disabilities.

The webinar is for people who receive Social Security disability benefits and who want to learn how the Ticket to Work program can help them earn money and become financially independent. Presidential Proclamation - National Disability Employment Awareness Month, 2012

Held each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is a national campaign that raises awareness about disability employment issues and celebrates the many contributions of America's workers with disabilities. This year's theme is "A Strong Workforce is an Inclusive Workforce: What Can YOU Do?" Get NDEAM resources, download or order the NDEAM poster, and learn how you can help raise awareness about the importance of a more inclusive America, one where every person is recognized for his or her abilities.

Job Opening for Trainer/Outreach Specialist at New England ADA Center - Apply by October 28

Seven States Receive Funding to Improve Education, Training & Employment for People with Disabilities

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded $20.7 million to seven states under the Disability Employment Initiative. The initiative helps to improve education, training and employment opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities who are unemployed, underemployed and/or receiving Social Security disability benefits. The grants support several workforce and disability service systems in each state to help people with disabilities find jobs in the public workforce system.

Success Stories from the Workforce Recruitment Program

The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal and private sector employers nationwide with college students and recent graduates with disabilities looking for jobs. Labor Department Awards New Grant to Run National Center for Preparing Youth with Disabilities for Employment

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a $1.1 million grant to the Institute for Educational Leadership to run the new National Technical Assistance and Demonstration Center on Preparing Youth with Disabilities for Employment. The center will work to improve employment and postsecondary education opportunities for youth with disabilities. The Center's work will focus on career exploration; youth development and leadership; and professional development.

Labor Department Announces Winners of Disability Employment Application Challenge

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced the winners of its disability employment application contest. The contest challenged developers to build tools to help improve job opportunities for people with disabilities using public resources and employment data. Three winners were chosen for developing applications that demonstrated innovation, usability and accessibility. Check out the three winning apps: "Access Jobs""VoisPal-Speak as You Think!" and "AccDC: Accelerated Dynamic Content".

Hospice Care Company Sued by EEOC for Firing Employee & Failing to Provide Accommodation

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has charged Mercy Hospice in Michigan, a member of the Trinity Home Health System, with disability discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act. An employee tried to return to work after a medical leave of absence, but was fired and not given a reasonable accommodation. The company said that she was an inactive employee and was not entitled to an accommodation. 

National Council on Disability (NCD) Chairman Responds to Editorial on Federal Hiring of Americans with Disabilities

NCD Chairman Jonathan Young released a response to the Washington Times August 22, 2012 editorial, which portrays the U.S. Department of Justice's hiring initiative of more Americans with disabilities as "crazy." Young states that the editorial uses both stereotypical and incorrect definitions of "disability." He also points out that the editorial is inaccurate in its interpretation of Executive Order 13548, which promotes the hiring of Americans with disabilities.

NCD Calls for Eliminating Subminimum Wages for People with Disabilities

The National Council on Disability (NCD) has released a report calling for the phase-out of subminimum wages for workers with disabilities. A provision in the Fair Labor Standards Act, known as the 14(c) program, allows employers who receive a certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor to pay less than federal minimum wage to workers with disabilities. The phase-out would be gradual and the changes would improve existing resources and create new methods to support individuals in integrated employment.

Education Department Awards Research Grant to Provide Opportunities for People with Disabilities

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a grant to SEDL of Austin, TX, to help people with disabilities through a Center on Knowledge Translation of Disability and Rehabilitation Research. The grant will help disability and rehabilitation researchers develop resources, training and technical assistance to improve the lives of people with disabilities. The goals of the project will be integration, employment and self-sufficiency so individuals with disabilities can achieve their full potential.

56.7 Million Americans Report Some Level of Disability

The U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Report Americans with Disabilities: 2010 finds that of the 303.9 million people in the 2010 population of the United States, 56.7 million, or 18.7 percent, reported some level of disability. Of those, 38.3 million, or 12.6 percent of all people, reported a severe disability. This link opens a PDF document.

EEOC Holds Public Meeting on Strategic Enforcement Plan

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently held its first-ever public meeting for input on developing a Strategic Enforcement Plan. Recommendations called for the EEOC to continue its investigations and legal efforts targeting specific employment issues and practices. Also, the EEOC was urged to focus enforcement on hiring discrimination and retaliation, as well as pay, pregnancy, and caregiver discrimination and other issues under the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act.

Job Accommodation Network (JAN) Training Modules on Workplace Accommodations

JAN has released the first in a series of fully-accessible online training modules. The first module is "JAN's Interactive Process." This 23 minute training has a downloadable transcript and handout, and describes a step-by-step process that employers can use to help successfully accommodate job applicants or employees. The next module is about the ADA Amendments Act.
