Guidelines for Using DoD Imagery

 

Imaging Ethics

Official Defense imagery includes all photographic and video images that are recorded or produced by persons acting for or on behalf of Department of Defense (DoD) activities, functions, or missions--regardless of the medium in which they are acquired, stored, or displayed.

Non-Commercial Use of Imagery

Guidelines for the use of DoD imagery depicting DoD personnel and materiel in Non-Advertising, Marketing, or Promotional Activities or Communications can be found in this section.

Commercial Use of Imagery

If imagery, either still or motion, is to be used for commercial advertisement, marketing or promotional activites or communications, follow the guidelines in this section. Additionally, the proposed layout with its accompanying copy must be approved by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, as described in this section.

Talent Releases. Our imagery is provided without talent releases on any individual portrayed. Imagery is provided with the understanding that the DoD has no authority to waive the privacy rights of any individual depicted in government media. And no exclusive rights to official records may be claimed by any organization or individual.

Commercial Endorsements. Users of DoD imagery will not portray, implicate or otherwise imply endorsement by the Department of Defense for any commercial product or service. For further information on the Commercial use of Imagery, click here.
