Commerce Assistant Secretary Michael C. CamuÑez Appointed to the Helsinki Commission
WASHINGTON — Michael C. Camuñez, Assistant Secretary for Market Access and Compliance at the U.S. Department of Commerce was appointed by President Obama to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe also known as the Helsinki Commission.
The Helsinki Commission is an independent U.S. Government agency charged with monitoring compliance with the Helsinki Accords and advancing comprehensive security through promotion of human rights, democracy, and economic, environmental and military cooperation in 56 countries.
“Assistant Secretary Camuñez will play an important role on the Commission, as he works to advance the economic development, integration, and liberalization of Europe's emerging economies,” said Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sánchez.
Camuñez will focus his work on the Commission’s Economic and Environmental Dimension, which promotes greater economic cooperation, good governance, sustainable development, and environmental protection among member states. Of particular importance for Camuñez will be the Commission’s anti-corruption work.
Camuñez plays a critical role in supporting President Obama’s economic recovery agenda by advancing National Export Initiative goals for the U.S. Department of Commerce. Under Camuñez’s leadership, the International Trade Administration’s Market Access and Compliance unit leads the way in developing and opening new markets for U.S. goods and services overseas, identifies and eliminates significant market access challenges, and helps monitor and enforce trade agreements and commitments.
