    MBDA fosters the growth and global competitiveness of U.S. businesses that are minority-owned. MBDA is building minority-owned firms of size, scale and capacity. More than 6,000 new jobs were created and thousands more were retained by minority firms in 2010 as a result of MBDA’s programs and services.

    The Research and Knowledge Management (RKM) unit supports MBDA’s goal to become a Knowledge Center for minority business enterprises (MBEs) in the public and private sector. 

    As the Research arm of the Agency, RKM produces research studies on an array of topics of importance to minority-owned businesses, including capital access, strategies and opportunities for growth, industry trends, innovation and global commerce. The unit also develops demographic trends on minority-owned businesses by racial/ethnic group, gender, industry, and geographic location.

    Office of Native American Business DevelopmentThe activities of the Office of Native American Business Development (ONABD) include the provision of direct services to American Indian and Alaska Natives, fostering of intergovernmental and industry collaboration, and promotion of economic and business development opportunities in Indian Country.  Community outreach has been a critical component of the ONABD’s work resulting in valuable insight and identification of economic development challenges.

    • Coordination and promotion of all Department of Commerce economic development initiatives with Indian Country;
    • Coordination of the Tribal Consultation Policy development and implementation across Commerce and in conjunction with tribal leaders;

    • Serve as Tribal liaison on behalf of the Secretary and the various bureaus within Commerce;

    • Serve as Intergovernmental Indian Country representative for Commerce working with the White House and other agencies on Indian Country initiatives and issues.

    MBDA actively promotes the strategic growth and expansion of minority business enterprises (MBEs) by offering management and technical assistance through a nationwide network of over 40 business centers.
