All-Armed Forces softball: Sweep dream for Army

Congratulations to the All-Army men’s and women’s softball teams, which swept the gold medals in the All-Armed Forces tournaments last week at Fort Sill, Okla., and to four overseas players selected to the All-Armed Forces teams that will play for the Amateur Softball Association’s national championship Sept. 28-30 in Oklahoma City.

Army’s women went 8-1, outdistancing Air Force (7-2) by one game. Navy went 3-6 and the Marine Corps finished last at 0-9.

On the men’s side, Army and Air Force tied at 7-2 for first place, but black-and-gold won the title based on head-to-head record against the airmen. Army beat Air Force 16-10 on opening day Sept. 16 and again 23-8 on Sept. 18, virtually clinching the gold medal. Air Force beat Army 12-8 on Sept. 20, but by then, Army had sealed the gold. Navy and Marine Corps each finished 2-7, with the sailors taking third place again by virtue of head-to-head play with the Leathernecks.

Playing for the All-Armed Forces men’s team in Oklahoma City will be John Allen of Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany; Michael Dochwat of Fort Shafter, Hawaii, and Wesley Cummins of Aviano Air Base, Italy. Monica Romero Flores, an Okinawa-based Marine, and Ashley Walker, a soldier assigned to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, will play for the All-Armed Forces women’s team.

Walker was joined by Elmendorf-Richardson teammate Jennifer Lake on the All-Armed Forces All-Tournament women’s team, and Dochwat and Allen were also named to the men’s All-Tournament team.
