Reference: DoD Directive 5240.06, “Counterintelligence Awareness and Reporting (CIAR),” May 17, 2011

Description: DoD Components are required by DoD Directive 5240.06 to provide Counterintelligence Awareness and Reporting training to all personnel within 90 days of initial assignment or employment to the Component and every 12 months thereafter. When an experienced Counterintelligence Agent is not available to provide such training in person, this web-based training may be used to meet the training requirement. The training includes the following:

  • The threat from Foreign Intelligence Entities (FIE)
  • The methods, also known as “modus operandi,” used by FIE
  • FIE use of the Internet and other communications such as social networking services
  • The counterintelligence insider threat
  • Recognizing anomalies
  • Reporting responsibilities regarding foreign travel and foreign contacts
  • Reporting requirements for the following:
    • Foreign intelligence contacts, activities, indicators, and behaviors
    • International terrorism contacts, activities, indicators, and behaviors
    • FIE-associated cyberspace contacts, activities, indicators, and behaviors

Prerequisites: None

Requirements: A passing grade of 75 percent on the final examination at the completion of this course allows students to print a certificate of successful completion.
