U.S. Marshals Task Force Officers Arrest Maui Man for Multiple Counts of Sexual Assault

Wailuku, HI – On Friday April 27, 2012 at approximately 7:50a.m., U.S. Marshal Task Force Officers located and arrested 40 year-old Jim Alan Balicanta at 85 Kapi Lane in Wailuku. Balicanta was wanted for a warrant issued on April 20, 2012 by Judge Rhonda Loo for 27 counts of Sexual Assault in the first degree and 25 counts of Sexual Assault in the third degree. Balicanta was a band teacher at an intermediate school in Wailuku. The sexual assaults occurred over a 3 year period before the juvenile victim came forward this January with the allegations. Balicanta is currently being held at the County jail on a $750,000.00 bail.

To ensure the safety of children across the country, the U.S. Marshals Service implemented an aggressive enforcement strategy - the Adam Walsh Act. Since July 2006, U.S. Marshals have apprehended approximately 20,000 fugitives wanted for sexual assaults, sex offender registration violations and other sex crimes.

Additionally, investigators have opened more than 2,200 investigations on convicted sex offenders for violations of the act and arrested more than 400 individuals, who have been federally charged.
