Marshall Center professors speak during International Women’s Summit

Kosovo SummitPRISTINA, Kosovo -- Three professors from the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies participated in the International Summit of Women “Partnership for Change: Empowering Women” Oct. 4-6 in Pristina, Kosovo.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright opened the summit attended by more than 200 women leaders from Europe, North America, Middle East, Africa, and beyond.  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton greeted the participants through video teleconference.

Marshall Center Dr. Petra Weyland, Dr. Valbona Zeneli and Professor Tom Wingfield moderated three of the six panels of the conference, titled “Security and Justice,” “Anticorruption,” and “Security Sector Reform.”

USAID and National Democratic Institute organized the event. The president of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, served as the host for the event. Jahjaga is also a graduate of the Marshall Center.

"(The summit) was a very successful event and unprecedented in Southeast Europe," said Zeneli. "The common assessment of the professors participating at the conference is that it was a very important event, which gave to the Marshall Center a very high visibility with the moderators of the three security-related panels."

Guard program brings states, nations together

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany - A workshop focused on terrorist use of a weapon of mass destruction brought U.S. and European partners together in Garmisch.

Members of the National Guard's State Partnership Program brought 43 people on 14 teams together for the workshop on the role of military in crisis and consequence management, Sept. 24-28, in an effort to foster increased cooperation and understanding between the countries and their state National Guard partners.

Participants developed a better view of the challenges presented by a difficult WMD scenario and the work helped improve the personal relationships between partners. The teams were encouraged to continue these relationships and to integrate the lessons learned into future partnership activities. A number of suggestions for future SPP support programs were developed.
