“Military Medicine,” the monthly international journal of The Association of Military Surgeons of the United States (AMSUS), the Society of Federal Health Professionals, has just published a “Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury” special supplemental. The edition highlights the recent progress made in the epidemiology, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and research of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, substance use disorder and traumatic brain injury. Although much about these subjects is still unknown, Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE) continues to seek ways to improve the continuum of care for service members and veterans’ well-being.

This supplemental issue was developed through the collaborative efforts of DCoE, Center for Deployment Psychology, Department of Veterans Affairs, Harvard University, U.S. Navy, Dartmouth College, U.S. Army and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. It serves as a positive reflection of the progress made in the field of military medicine after more than a decade of war, and as a reminder that this journey is not yet complete.

The articles in this special publication focus on where we have been, where we are and where we need to go. It is through committed, ongoing collaboration that further advances in military medicine will be made.

Navy 20 year veteran, It took me years before I filed on PTSD I hit my head on board ship many a time while working on some equipment. Use to get stinking drunk up and tell I turned 21. It just a tast of what we did back in the 1950 to the 1970. All I can say is you have your work cut out for you. Good Luck P.S. I do not drink any more as I am type 2 diabetic from A.O. During Vietnam 1966

Hi, I am one of the people suffering from severe depression with mood disorder and got 60% disability for this from the VA. They did that so they didn't have to give me the diagnosis of PTSD. I guess it was all about the money, like this website. I am a 100% Disabled Veteran and I don't understand why Disabled Veterans have to pay to get a copy of a report that pertains to people like me? I don't think that is the right thing to do. Bad enough we are too disabled to work, but we have time to read, and many cannot afford the $30 for the publication and for other similar publications. Since this is a government website, why are we required to pay for it? Figures that the ones that need it the most can't get it, but those that have jobs and work for the government can access it without paying the $30. Am I right? One would think you could set up a way for Disabled Veterans like me to access at least the electronic copies that I am sure you have available. Just my thoughts about this and other publications. Very Respectfully, David Thomas.

Patients in the VA PTSD program should have a 'Name Plate issued by the VA stating that they are going through PTSD treatment. The same with a low vision person needs ID.

As a military spouse (2 times over) and widow, I have dedicated my life to military and veteran suicide. I recently completed my doctoral dissertation on Military Suicide Casualties as experienced by their bereaved survivors.. I would be highly interested in publishing part or all of my study in the journal or newsletter, if you should have any advice into the process or criteria. Semper Fi, Carla Stumpf-Patton
