Hero & Remembrance Run
Tripler Fisher House will be hosting a Hero & Remembrance run in conjunction with the Pacific Aviation Museum's Biggest Little Airshow. For the Fisher House part there will be a section that will feature some of the military and civilian groups that help support families who are going through a medical crisis as well as groups that have programs to support Troops and their families. Admission is free and shirts will be available for purchase with all proceeds going to support the Tripler Fisher House. Annual Wounded Warrior Golf Tournament
Annual Wounded Warrior Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, August 20 at the Waikele Golf Club on 94-200 Paioa Place in Waipahu. Registration and open range is from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and there is a Shotgun Start at Noon. It is a scramble format, there will be a raffle, and awards will be given in different categories. Joint Venture Education Forum (JVEF) 11th Annual Meeting Celebration
The Joint Venture Education Forum (JVEF) will hold its eleventh Annual Meeting celebration on August 30, 2012 from 9:00-11:00am at the Ford Island Conference Center, with registration, displays and refreshments from 8:00-9:00am. The conference is hosted by Executive Co-Chairs Colonel Christopher Wilson of U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) and Kathryn Matayoshi, Superintendent of the Hawaii State Department of Education. The JVEF is a partnership between Hawaii's military community, the Hawaii public schools and other community organizations.

2nd Annual Tunnel To Towers (T2T) Pearl Harbor 5K
What: 2nd Annual Tunnel To Towers (T2T) Pearl Harbor 5K
When: Saturday, September 8th @ 7:00AM
Where: Richardson Field (intersection of Kam Hwy and Salt Lake Blvd at the Aloha Stadium)
Why: Honoring all fire fighters and U.S. service members, both past & present

This will be the second year the run is conducted on Oahu. The Pearl Harbor run is part of a nationwide series of T2T events which is designed to raise awareness in support of first responders and our Military. Money raised in Hawaii goes primarily to benefit two efforts:
1) Building Homes for Americas Bravest: The Gary Sinise Foundation partners with the Tunnel To Towers Foundation in a program called "Building For America's Bravest". This program utilizes a portion of the funds raised thru the T2T 5K events to construct smart homes for severely injured service members. The very first home was given to SGT Brendan Marrocco, who was severely wounded during his deployment to Iraq with the 25th Infantry Division in 2009.
2) Local Fire Fighters: The run was a great success last year due in large part to the incredible support provided by the Federal Fire Department. A portion of the proceeds will also be given to the Hawaii Fire Chiefs Association in recognition of their tremendous efforts on Oahu. The race benefits both local and federal fire fighters.
There are great prizes, the biggest being TWO ROUND TRIP TICKETS on ALASKA AIRLINES!
In order to be eligible to win a prize, you must be registered for the event, be present when your name/number is called, have a Government issued ID with you, and be 18 or older.

With election activity steadily picking up, defense officials are in the process of issuing regular election-year guidance to remind military and Defense Department civilians that they're subject to rules regulating their involvement in political activities.

June 1st marks the beginning of Hurricane Season in Hawaii. The attached handbook, created by the University of Hawaii Sea Grant program, has some excellent information on preparing for hurricanes and other natural hazards. This handbook will serve as a good reminder to those of you that are familiar with Hawaii and its natural hazards, and for those of you that are new to the islands, you will find that Hawaii has some unique characteristics. Remember - it is not IF, but WHEN the next hurricane will impact the islands. BE PREPARED!

With the political party conventions fast approaching and a presidential election in the Fall, it is a good time to remember that there are restrictions in the Hatch Act and Department of Defense (DoD) policy concerning political activities of Federal/DoD employees.
1. Civilian Personnel: While the Hatch Act and DoD policy allow most Federal civilian employees to actively participate in political activities on their own time and outside of the Federal workplace, there are significant restrictions on fundraising, running for office in partisan elections, and using one's official authority or influence to interfere with or affect the result of an election. Employees are prohibited from engaging in political activity while on duty, in a government building, or in a government vehicle. Political activity is defined as an activity directed toward the success or failure of a political party, candidate for partisan political office, or partisan political group. Please note:
a. The Hatch Act does not prohibit all discussions by federal employees on political subjects or candidates in a federal building or while on-duty. In fact, it explicitly protects the rights of federal employees to express their opinions on political subjects and candidates both publicly and privately. Thus, "water-cooler" type discussions and exchanges of opinion among co-workers concerning the events of the day, including political campaigns are allowable; and
b. Federal civilian employees may be candidates for public office in nonpartisan elections, may register to vote and vote in elections, may assist in voter registration drives, may express opinions about candidates and issues, may contribute money to political organizations, may attend political fundraising functions, may attend and be active at political rallies and meetings, and may join and be an active member of a political party or club.
2. Military Members: Members of the Armed Forces who are on active duty are subject to a different and generally more restrictive set of rules concerning their political activities. As with civilian employees, service members are prohibited from engaging in political activity while on duty, while in uniform, in a government building, or in a government vehicle. Members on active duty are permitted to express their personal opinions on political candidates, sign petitions to place a candidate's name on the ballot, and attend a political event as a spectator, although not in uniform. They, however, may not participate in partisan political activities, solicit or engage in partisan fundraising activities, serve as the sponsor of a partisan club or speak before a partisan gathering.
