Colonel Robert W. Stanley II is the Vice Commander, 341st Missile Wing, Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont. The wing's 4,000 personnel defend the United States with combat-ready Airmen and nuclear forces. They are responsible for base support, maintenance, security and operation of 150 Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles located throughout a 13,800 square-mile complex in central Montana.

Colonel Stanley was commissioned through ROTC at Purdue University in 1988. After completing Undergraduate Missile Training in 1989, he served as a combat crew member in the USAF Ground-Launched Cruise Missile program. Following an assignment to the 487th Tactical Missile Wing at Comiso Air Station, Sicily, Colonel Stanley underwent Intercontinental Ballistic Missile operations training and was assigned to Strategic Air Command. After a Minuteman III crew tour at the 90th Strategic Missile Wing in Cheyenne, Wyo., he was certified as an Air Force Launch Controller for the Delta II spacelift program at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. He went on to serve with Air Force Space Command's Inspector General team, and in their Operations Directorate. Colonel Stanley has also served at the Pentagon as Deputy Division Chief for Space Launch and Ranges for HQ USAF. Additionally, he commanded the 90th Operations Support Squadron after serving as the Operations Officer for the 319th Missile Squadron. Colonel Stanley is a master space and missile operator with numerous GLCM and ICBM alerts as well as 17 DoD, NASA, or commercial spacelift missions, including NASA's Mars Pathfinder launch. He also served as Chief, Strategic Operations Division on the Joint Staff (J3). Leading the largest division on the Joint Staff, he was responsible for providing direct operational support to the President, Secretary of Defense, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on all matters regarding nuclear and conventional global strike operations. His division was also the Joint Staff focal point for Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) counter-proliferation operations, DoD Continuity of Operations and US Continuity of Government plans and procedures, as well as strategic command and control systems and procedures for the National Military Command System. His responsibilities included maintaining the President's Nuclear Decision Handbook. Prior to his current assignment, Colonel Stanley was assigned as the visiting Air Force Nuclear Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.
