29 September 2009 - What are Seasonal Forecasts?

The day-to-day forecasts produced by Met Éireann are “deterministic” in the sense that they provide specific details regarding the weather with respect to location and time (e.g. “rain will reach Dublin around noon on Sunday...”). While great strides have been made in recent years in extending the range of forecasts, for fundamental reasons deterministic forecasts will never have any skill in predicting the weather weeks or months ahead.

01 October 2009 - September 2009: Dry for most of month after wet start; warmer and sunnier than normal

The very disturbed weather of most of the summer months extended into early September also, but high pressure close to or over Ireland gave mostly settled conditions from the 9th onwards. After wet and often windy weather during the first week, very little rain was measured during the remainder of the month, when winds were mostly light. This latter period began with very sunny weather between the 9th and 14th, but thereafter it was mainly dull.
