Federal Agency Partnerships

 

In May 2010, President Obama directed the National Security Staff (NSS) to develop an enduring, government-wide approach to supporting our military families. The NSS convened the Military Family Interagency Policy Committee (IPC), which included representatives from every cabinet agency, to identify and address the most pressing military family issues.

Watch First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden as they announced the initiative and surprised military families, veterans and volunteers.

Presidential Study Directive-9 (PSD-9) is the culmination of the Military Family IPC’s findings, and outlines agency commitments to enhance support to our military families.

In a ceremony at the White House on January 25, 2011, the President, joined by Senior officials from agencies and organizations across the government, unveiled this new, whole-of-government approach to military family support.

Department of Veterans Affairs, Meeting America’s Commitment to Veterans and Military Families

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has made the care and support of military families one of our highest priorities. We can never do enough for the families of the men and women, who protect and defend our nation, and we are committed to improving and expanding our services throughout a broad range of programs. More often than not, military families are the first line of support and care for our Veterans and VA stands ready to assist them in that endeavor.

The Department of Labor provides job employment and training services to assist veterans in transitioning from military to working life. With an emphasis on employment programs, this resource also provides support for service members and their families.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is a resource to support service men and women in regards to substance abuse and mental health issues. SAMHSA provides information on programs designed for veterans, as well as their families, to ensure behavioral health services are accessible to those in need.

Treasury For… Military Families

The Department of the Treasury for Military Families is a resource on financial information for members of the military and their families. From specialized tax assistance, to employment opportunities for veterans, the U.S. Department of the Treasury provides financial content for service men and women.

Department of Education Veterans and Military Families

The Department of Education provides information and resources to those in the military and their families. With sections on grant services and financial aid, to child care for military men and women, the Department of Education is dedicated to supporting educational opportunities for military men and women.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development is committed to eliminating homelessness and promoting security among veterans and military families. With resources on promoting housing security for veterans and their families, the Department of Housing and Urban Development is devoted to keeping service men and women secure.

The United States Department of Agriculture: Military and Veterans Programs

The Department of Agriculture is committed to encouraging the health development of military children. With programs that focus on agriculture and educational, as well as getting children involved, the Department of Agriculture is providing resources to service members and their families.

Health and Human Services

The Department of Health and Human Services and its operating divisions offer a variety of resources and programs specifically designed to support military families. This includes health insurance services, to programs on mental health and substance abuse assistance.

U. S. Small Business Administration

Small Business Administration Veterans and Military Families

The U. S. Small Business Administration continues to expand their offerings to Veterans and Military Families. Resources the SBA provides includes creating Veteran Business Out Centers and establishing new Entrepreneurship Boot Camp programs specifically for women veterans and for Reserve Component members and their immediate families.

U.S. Social Security Administration Disability Benefits for Wounded Warriors

Military service members can receive expedited processing of disability claims from Social Security. Benefits available through Social Security are different than those from the Department of Veterans Affairs and require a separate application.

The expedited process is used for military service members who become disabled while on active military service on or after October 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurs.

The Office of National Drug Control Policy stands with the President and fellow agencies in furthering the commitment to dedicated military families and veterans that serve our Nation. The Office of National Drug Control Policy provides resources and services on substance abuse treatment.

National Endowment for the Arts

The National Endowment for the Arts has partnered with Blue Star Families and more than 1,000 museums in all 50 states to launch Blue Star Museums. These museums nationwide will offer free admission to military personnel and their families from Memorial Day, May 30, 2011, through Labor Day, September 5, 2011.

U.S. Department of Interior: Military Families and Wounded Warriors

Secretary Salazar had established “Support of Military Families and Veterans” as a high-priority component of the goals set for the Department of the Interior. DoI’s plan includes support of military families as an integral part of the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative, support of young veterans and children through Interior youth programs, and in the employment of veterans.
