Background

MC4 use has expanded to more than 15 countries, often operating in communication silos that present unique challenges to maintaining consistent use and optimal technical support of MC4 systems.

Challenges

Providing technical support to MC4 users in dangerous, remote areas of the world remains a challenge, yet it’s integral to MC4’s mission. Also, because MC4 system use differs by location and individual proficiency, the methods with which medical information is captured via MC4 varies greatly. This variance creates a question of data integrity, and ultimately depreciates the value of the MC4 system to the deployed medical units and beneficiaries of the medical data gathered in combat.

Way Ahead

Years of experience working hand-in-hand with users and medical command leadership have given birth to the Commander’s Guide to MC4. The all-inclusive reference guide provides MC4 users with step-by-step instructions to take ownership of, use and maintain their MC4 systems, both in theater and in garrison. It ensures a continuous, systematic approach to supporting the creation and transmission of electronic medical records and automated maintenance of class VIII medical supplies.

Additionally, MC4 is deploying new technology solutions and partnering with the Army signal communities to remotely update and maintain MC4 systems. Adding MC4 systems to enterprise networks extends MC4’s technical support arm and enhances customer support while improving the security of the system in the process.

Objectives

The objectives of this initiative include:

  • Use technology to deliver customer support for end users
  • Reduce customer wait times
  • Limit dangerous travel for MC4 support activities
  • Encourage medical units to ensure data integrity through the implementation of best business practices
  • Heighten command awareness of MC4 command and control (C2) capabilities

Quick Facts

  • Commander’s Guide to MC4 unifies electronic medical record (EMR) policies and procedures from the DOD, Army, Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Office of the Surgeon General (OTSG)
  • Army support personnel remotely manage more than 200 MC4 systems utilized by 19 units across seven forward operating bases in Afghanistan

Commanders

  • Heightened unit readiness, and greater use of command and control capabilities

Systems Administrators
