Working for Change Policy Forum Features Under Secretary Blank

Washington, DC – Under Secretary Blank was a featured speaker and panelist at the “Working for Change” poverty policy forum on Capitol Hill.  Blank said, “the new Supplemental Poverty Measure will provide an alternative lens to understand poverty and measure the effects of anti-poverty policies.”  The forum presented information to congressional staffers and other organizations about how poverty is defined, and the new poverty measure that is being implemented in New York.  The “Working for Change” policy forum is sponsored by the Community Service Society (CSS) which is a nonprofit organization that has been fighting poverty in New York for over 160 years.  In recent years, their work has focused on using work and employment opportu

Kalihi, Hawaii —Commerce Under Secretary for Economic Affairs Rebecca Blank urged Hawaiians to participate in the 2010 Census at a Census in Schools event at the Linapuni Elementary School on Tuesday. “As you know, Hawaii was an undercounted state in the 2000 Census, and we don’t want that to happen in 2010,” Blank said. “The complete count of our children nationwide is critical to their health, education and the future strength of our communities and labor force. That’s why it’s so important parents list their children on the 2010 Census form and mail it back.” (More)

U.S.-Chinese Statistics Working Group Reports On Differences in U.S.-China Trade Data

Washington, DC – The U.S. Department of Commerce is today releasing findings of an analytic report on the differences between the official trade statistics produced by the United States and China. This report was prepared cooperatively by analysts in the United States and China as part of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade Statistics Working Group (JCCT SWG).

Census Bureau to Develop Supplemental Poverty Measure

New measurement will complement but not replace existing statistic

The Commerce Department’s U.S. Census Bureau is preparing to develop a Supplemental Poverty Measure that will use the best new data and methodologies to obtain an improved understanding of the economic well-being of American families and of how federal policies affect those living in poverty. The initiative to create the new statistic is included in the President’s FY2011 budget proposal.
